Fish Lake Ice?

How much longer will fishlake have atv or snowmobile friendly ice? I was there on friday and the ice was still 20 inches thick, but there were some spots that were extremely slushy in the late afternoon. If anybody has any idea please enlighten me. Here is my lone mack for the day, i lost another one on my second pole while i was fiddling with this one, at least he made it back okay though.

That is a nice middle-ranged Fish Lake mack. Fish lake macks are tricky most of the time, so it is no surpirse, and you are not the first one to have a lonely mack. Did you try for rainbows, splake, and/or perch? The ice there will probably still be fishable for another 2-3 weeks, like Strawberry, perhaps even later. I do not know about snowmobiles or atv though, the edge might break up too much, and you may only be able to get on with a board.

We caught somewhere around a hundred splake, we had to use really heavy jigs just to get to the bottom without one eating it. Got really old after a while, i wish i could find a spot without them.

looking at the dark coloring and spotting on that fish and the somewhat rounded tale. i would say the one in the pic looks more like a splake then a mac to me.. still a very nice fish.. i have been seeing a lot more bigger fish come out of fish lake this year than in the past 5 years. hope the trend continue's.

Strange how those splake are there in large numbers or few and far between. When we fished it a week ago today we had no problem at all with the splake. In fact, I was using a lighter second rod with smaller offerings hoping to catch the splake and rainbows, and both were few and far between, and we fished in three different locations and at several different depths.

the picture is a little dark, but the fish is definitely a mac. If that was a splake he would be on my wall and not still swimming around in the lake. Believe me i would take a splake, brown, rainbow or whatever that big any day, i was disappointed when i saw the mac spots on it.
The small splake were a nuisance all day, we had to go with 5 inch tubes and 3/4 oz. heads and even that didn't scare them off all the way. Hopefully this cold weather keeps the ice good until saturday.

We stayed in the same spot all day, Straight east of the lakeside marina. The splake never left but the cooperative macs came through about once every 2 hours. If you don't like catching tons of 12-18 inch splake, then make sure your jig is big enough to spook them away. Use sucker meat, or perch meat, but not a big chunk because it kills the darting and circle down action of a tube jig.
