Willard question
#1
Anyone have any input on how Willard fishes from the shore? The boy wants to catch a catfish (say's he's tired of catching rainbows) and we've got an open afternoon saturday open. I'm looking for a place to take him and a couple of his sisters for several hours where they'll likely have some action.
Not looking for anyones secret spot, but some general information would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Hey Tyler-

When I was there on Tuesday there was a bank fisherman fishing the little "lagoon" by the outlet in the Northeast Corner. The lagoon is about 8' deep or so, and the guy was catching some fish in there.

Bring some crawlers and some chub minnows and you should be able to score some kitties. [cool]

[cool][#0000ff]Just to add to that, you can park anywhere along the "Eagle Beach" area and hike out around the exposed gravel bar to the west. Follow it around to the north until you can' go any further without getting wet feet. On that narrow bar you can cast out into the lake for wipers and cats or back into the "lagoon" for cats and carp.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]That spot is one of the few areas around the lake that has deep water near shore. It drops off to 10 feet deep within a short cast from shore.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]There is also good potential shore fishing from both the north and south side of the channel at the north marina. It takes a few casts to determine where the deeper spots are, but lots of catfish in close at times. Boat traffic will be bad on the weekend, but the cats often don't mind that. PS...the deep spot straight out from the shoreline, around the corner from the north entrance of the marina is a good spot if you hit it right.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Most other areas around the lake the water is very shallow for a long ways out from waters edge.[/#0000ff]

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it. Just curious, where is this "Eagle Beach" that you referred to? I'm familiar with the NE outflow (fished it many years ago with a group of scouts), but the Eagle Beach area is new to me.

What I hope to be able to do is to have the kids catch a few of those cookie cutter cats that you've all been posting pictures of (love me a catfish fry with some hush puppies).

Thanks again!

EDIT: I take it Eagle Beach is the day use/group area south of the camp grounds by the north marina?

Thanks again!

[cool][#0000ff]Eagle Beach is on the signs as you pass the campgrounds and head toward the marina. Third right turn (after the two campground entrances).[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I am attaching a "doctored" Google map that should help somewhat.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]You will be amazed at how low the water is. Hike along the edges of the beach out to the fishing area. Sometimes some pesky midges and a few skeeters, so take some juice. Also sunscreen and plenty to drink. A couple of surface to surface missiles for the PWC crowd might be helpful too.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Plain old crawlers will get the job done, but minnows or carp meat might work better at times. When the cats get frisky, they smack little jigs with a piece of worm on them, and not a long cast from shore if you are in the right area.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Good luck.[/#0000ff]
