I have a 1996 GMC sonoma (2 wheel drive, 2.2 L) that has been giving me some headlight problems lately. I will be driving it and the headlights and dashlights will go out and then come back on. The lights don't flicker or get dim, they just go off and then turn back on.
I have checked the fuse and it was fine. I have had some problems with a battery lately and was wondering if a bad battery would cause this???

It's not lilely the battery. It might be a poor connection on one of the battery terminals although that would more likely show up when you tried to start it. Wouldn't hurt to check them though. The most likely problem is a loose connection, probably at the light switch, might even be the switch itself.

I had a problem like this once, I ended up changing the headlight switch (easy) and it took care of the problem. The lights on the dash may be tied into the headlight switch, usually there is no voltage limit on the switch so if it goes it takes everything else with it. Cheap and easy fix, change the headlight switch.

I had a similar problem on New Year's day this year while on a trip to Strawberry. It was a bad headlight switch.

I crashed my car and smashed in the front end. When it came back repaired it had a lot of electrical problems. One of which was when I would be driving at night my lights and entire dash would go out. I took it to a mechanic and he said I needed a new $400 computer. I didn't believe him so I took it to my neighbor in 5 minutes he found that when they repaired my car they had attached one of my ground wires to my radiator instead of the car body causing it to not be properly grounded. Ten seconds later by moving the wire a half an inch to the frame it was fixed. Not sure if that is the problem but it should be an easy thing to check. There are usually 5 or 6 grounds wires coming off different parts of the engine and battery and different parts. I would check and make sure they are all still connected to the body of the car. It sure saved me a lot of headache.
