pumphouse sat.
#1
a few friends and I decided to hit the ice on saturday and were hoping to get into loads of fun ice fishing at the pumphouse. There were a couple of newbies and I wanted to get them into ice fishing. Unfortunately the fishing was great but the catching wasn't. We thought it was going to be good when I caught a crappie on the first drop and my friend hoosier (i think that is his name on here) caught a few gills right off , but as soon as the sun came up the fish dissappeared. After a while there was quite a few people out there (I met bassackwards and his cool little boy out there as well as a few other bft'ers but I don't remember all of their names). Anyway after a few hours of no catching we decided to try and find fish elswhere and my friend Huston pulled out a charcoal grill and made us steaks. Now that made the fishing even better even thought the catching was slow. In the end after drill a lot of holes and prospecting a lot we finally got into the gills really well just as the sun was setting and fished until just after dark. Until that point I had managed 2 decent gills one crappie and a few 3 inch gills. Then after the sun went down I pulled in 14 gills in rapid succession one after another and my friends started pulling them in as well and in the end I think we managed around 30 or more gills. Oh well it wasn't steller but at least we learned a few things about when and where they were and it was a beautifull (chilly) day on the ice.

I had the same thing happen for me Friday evening. As soon as the sun was going down the gills started biting like crazy. If I had stayed longer I think I could have kept on catching fish but I had to head home. Sounds like it's an early morning and late evening bite.

What is a decent gill to you?

I caught about a 6 1/2 incher on my way to the pumphouse (first bluegill), didn't get there. I forgot I didn't have my bucket, so I would have to carry the fish back in my pockets. Just stopped off at the Jordan for a few hours instead.

Fishing was looking to be decent, but after I caught my first, a few familes came over and scared the fish away. One of them fell into a whole I drilled. I was next to it and told the kid, "There's a whole there," in as muted voice as I could as to not scare more fish. He didn't listen and put his boot in. Luckily it was only a 6" otherwise, his whole leg could have gone under.

Yeah my son had a blast that is for sure. He didn't want to leave and he did end up catching the biggest bluegill. I don't know if he is there for the fishing or for teh goofing around and picking on people by throwing snow balls (all in fun) He is a blast and full of spunk God I love that kid!

sorry to answer your question a decent gill to me is one over 8 inches, but I usually don't like keeping them under 9 inches. ( i grew up by pelican so I am used to big gills)

Thanks for that. My lil 6.5 incher I didn't get a great deal of meat out of, but sure was tasty.
