More Yuba Perch Jerkin' 1-13-09

[cool][#0000ff]Put a serious test on Roghet today. He is an artist and seldom sees a sunrise. Gets up at 9 and wakes up at noon. You know the type. I made him show up at my place by 5 am...and he was on time. He has potential.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We were actually on the ice at the Oasis ramp before daybreak...about 7 AM. He had to rerig with the aid of my little head lamp. We were accompanied out by 2Fishon and by Ice Princess, her daughter Sheyenne and FishFearMe2. Good to meet you finally, Brent.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Had a couple of other two man groups set up in the same general area. When the noise of the drilling died off and the sky got lighter the perch drifted in for a checkout of the wierdos. Using my pale perch colored blade bait that had been my best lure on Sunday, I put four perch on the ice in about 15 minutes. Then others began with the onesies and twosies. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]It never got busy, but everybody was dinging one here and there and most of the fish were good sized. Ice Princess and her court got into a good area and all of her group was catching fish...especially little Sheyenne. She is a cutie and a dedicated anglerette. I was really glad to see her having a good time.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Roghet started slow, but picked up a few fish after tieing on one of my blade baits. He didn't quite leave with a limit but I think I finally convinced him that you don't have to use micro tackle on those toad perchies. His biggest (phat 12 incher) came on one of my chartreuse minnow jigs while using one of my longer and lighter rods. I think we will be building him some new rods to go along with the new jigs he and his sons are learning to make.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I caught a limit, using only about three different lures...all tipped with "processed" perch meat. Could not buy a bite on crawler today, although Roghet did score one decent perch on a bitty jig and some waxworms.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Great weather today, with only a bit of slush forming on top of the ice as we left about noonish. Had a good chat with Jeff Rasmussen, Park Manager after we got back to the car. Nice guy and likes to see everybody having a good time.[/#0000ff]

Hey I have to say today was awesome!!!! I do have to point something out if you look in the picture called Sheyenne's first you will see her sandwich at her feet, she was so excited about getting a fish, she jumped up knocking her sandwich off her lap, and didn't even know it until after all the pics where taken. We had the greatest laugh over that one. Any way just to add to the report all 3 of us limited out it wasn't fast but it was fun.

Great to be out love fishing with ya Brent and of course Sheyenne.

It was a beautiful day to be fishing, Only a slight breeze for a short period of time. Took awhile ( and some of TubeDudes processed perch meat) before we found fish in 45 feet of water. When a school came through we would all get hit for a few minutes. It was great to see the little one catching fish and she need no help from her mom I might add. Thanks again Pat for the secret perch morsels. Its always great to see a master at work. Another fantastic day on the ice, and a limit of tasty toad perch for dinner

[cool][#0000ff]Hey Bro, you did a great job of helping the ladies get set up and to stay comfy. Glad I could provide some "perch pizza" to entice the fat yellow fishies. That stuff always works for me...except at Starvation. Sometimes the crawlers work better over there.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We couldn't have asked for a nicer day for fishing. At least Sheyenne could remain outside the tent and enjoy the activity too.[/#0000ff]

Good to finally meet you. I ended up with 6. I only caught one more after that group of guys came and set up right in my lap. All but one of my fish came on a crippled herring tipped with crawler. The other took a spoon tipped with a salmon egg. I missed alot of bites. I like to hook set with just a flip of the wrist, but those little rods don't have the back bone for it. I liked the size of the rods you were using.

That was hilarious when your girl dumped her sandwich on the ice when she caught that fish. Very entertaining. I must say you have a contagious laugh. Everyone could tell when one of you had a fish. It was nice to see a family out together. Mostly it's just a bunch of fishing bachelors.

Nice report. I may have to go look over at Oasis when I go again.

Sounds like you had a snow machine to get you out to the narrows - what was the ice thickness out that way?

Did you come from painted rock or from the dam?

I want to head around the narrows next Monday and was hoping someone would tell me the depth that was working in that part of the lake.

Thanks in advance.

[#000000]HEY NOW, I resemble that remark! [Wink] I'm pleased you were aware of the challenge you placed before me. So let this be a warning to anyone that goes out with TubeDude - have an open mind, and a thick skin in case you have to read about yourself on the internet! [:p]

Yes it's very true, I take some morbid pleasure when I read reports of those getting to the water before dawn, and the bite starts at 10 AM. [Wink] But yeah, silly me for thinking it would be light by the time we got to the docks so I could intend to rig myself after seeing what TD had on his line. I don't claim to an expert, but I try to be a good student. I now have a headlamp in my box-o-fishing-stuff.

I must say though, that TD did me a tremendous disfavor in letting me use his rod. (Ignorance is bliss donchaknow.) After catching one with it, my sentiment was like what Will Smith exclaimed in [/#000000][#000000]the movie[/#000000][#000000] in "Men in Black" "I GOTTA GET ONE A THESE!" [cool] I told my son of the experience, and he said "So, now are we going to learn to make poles now too?" I still believe that one size doesn't fit all fishing situations, but I ask myself "wouldn't I rather go to battle with a sword, rather than a dagger?" It sure made it easier to detect a bite, set the hook - and feel the fight of the fish. Live and learn I did.

Thanks TD, for stating that I have "potential." And as to the next challenge I say "bring it on!" [Smile]
Great reports tubedude. How thick is the ice down there?
[cool][#0000ff]The ice is about 5" average, with a few spots a bit thinner or thicker. It does get "wet" around the edges in the afternoon but freezes solid at night.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Have seen some wheelers on the ice, and no big holes where any have gone through. And, there are no warm springs or bubblers in the lake that I know of. But, it still pays to watch the ice carefully and don't take unnecessary chances.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I couldn't see it too clearly but it looked like there might be a pressure ridge forming east of the Oasis ramp...across to Walleye Point.[/#0000ff]

I have never used perch meat as bait before....in fact....putting a perfectly good piece of perch fillet on the hook rather than in my belly seems criminal! [Wink]

What are the regulations behind using perch meat as bait? Do you clean your first one and then catch nine more?

You are usually going to catch a little one that you can cut up for bait, however, the belly strip on a larger fish can also be used ( It usually does not stay on the fillet anyway). It is legal to use perch meat on the body of water where it is caught/present. You can clarify the regs by checking the Fishing proclmation or going to the DWR website.

[cool][#0000ff]I think you were probably asking ME these questions. You need to click on a post made by the person you are addressing rather than on just the last post.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You need to review the proclamation to learn the regulations. Basically, you can use perch meat on any water in which perch live. The differences are that you can't use it in Bear Lake and you can't use a piece bigger than 1 square inch when fishing Pineview. Otherwise, you can use anything from whole (dead) perch to pieces of whatever size you want to.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I do not sacrifice "filleting size" perch for bait. But, on many perch excursions I end up keeping a few smaller ones specifically to "process" for future use as bait.. Ideal is about 6" to 7" in length. Any smaller and you don't get much for your trouble. Larger ones are big enough to fillet for the pan.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I begin by scaling the ones I will be cutting up for bait. You need to scale them before they dry out or the scales turn to iron...and you can't remove them and you can't put a hook through them. Once scaled, I fillet the perch and slice out the rib cages. Then I freeze two small fillets in a little plastic bag, with a bit of water. I squeeze out the excess water and air bubbles to prevent freezer burn.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The day before a planned trip, I take one or two packages of bait fillets out of the freezer and thaw at room temperature. Then, I cross cut the little fillets into bait strips. I sprinkle them with salt and squirt on some crawdad oil before putting them back in the bag and then into the refrigerator until I load up for fishing.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The law on Yuba says you can only keep 10 perch, and that you must keep the first 10 you catch during the winter months...when the perch come from deep water and will not survive being released. The letter of the law would be that you can only have 9 perch plus a bait perch in your possession. However, the DWR officers have tended to overlook it if you bring some bait strips from perch caught in another lake. But...if you cut up a perch you catch at Yuba and use it for bait, they could just as easily include that in your fish count for the day. Some discretion here.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]A lot of perchhounds start fishing with crawlers or waxies and then either cut up the first small perch they catch...or cut a belly strip from a larger one. Of course perch eyes are often good bait and each perch you catch provides two more baits.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Virtually all the predators (including perch) in Yuba feed on perch, so perch meat is traditionally one of the best baits.[/#0000ff]

What is the parking situation on the Oasis side. Do you have to park in the Marina area and pay a fee or can you park along the road by dam and skirt the fee issue. I am quite cheap so I am always looking for the freebie.
