Twin Lakes Ice Fishing

[:/]My son and I and my son-in-law ice-fished Twin Lakes right after the new year. Saw plenty of fish with my depth finder but couldn't get any to bite. I checked three other groups of ice-fishermen on the lake and ony one six inch fish was on the ice. We headed over to Glendale for perch. Trout were biting good for one couple. Later three guys about high school senior age had got in to some 8 to 9 inch perch and one about 12 inches long using a micro jig of a pearl color and giant meal worms. Later we used their ice holes and iced about eight perch around eight inches and three trout 12-17" long.

Three of us went back on Jan. 20, and hit the ice about 8:30 in the morning for the morning bite. The day was totally clear and not a cloud in the sky. No bites.[frown] Finally headed up to the center of the lake near the north bays. One guy was cussing the trout. He couldn't get his bait to the bottom without 12" trout grabbing it. He was after the perch on bottom, had several perch around 8 inches and one crappie. Later he left to fish the far upper end of the res. for bluegill. We used his holes but couldn't get any perch to bite. Caught 10 trout and lost several more. Finally one eight inch perch half hour before dark. []
Fishing has been spotty the last several days because of sunny days and high pressure system. Now cloudy days should turn the fish on for a great bite. By the way we had really great perch fishing on Twin Lakes last year on two different trips. [:p]

Nice report, I've spent several days this year on Glendale and have had very little luck finding some perch. It's good to hear I just have to keep looking. I've got a pretty good idea too, I saw those high school guys and where they fished[sly]. Can you give me any clues on how deep you were fishing? Thanks for the info in the post.

We were fishing about 500 yards up from the main landing about out in the middle of the reservoir where there is a large open sided hay shed on the south side, and a small hill with a small (15-20 ft) tree at the base of the hill on the shoreline on the north side. Water depth was about 21' to 23' deep. Those high school guys
told us they were catching the perch in shallower water about 8 to 10 feet earlier in the day, but, as the day progressed the perch moved out into the deeper water. Also they mentioned they were feeding on crappie minnows as a few of the perch spit some up after they were landed. We had a couple of ours do the same thing.
If you get into some larger perch send me back some info. I'm also planning on going to Alexander res on Tues. 27th for perch. A friend of mine told me a guy from near there has been doing pretty good on the perch this winter.

Thanks for the info, I'll keep you posted on what I find. If crappie are something your after, I got into a ton of them at Newton in Utah on Saturday. They made an excellent dinner!

I fished Glenndale yesterday from 730-330 and all i got was the small planter bows, couldnt keep em off whatever i tried. Had to keep 4 as they all hit hard and swallow fast. When i cleaned them, yes, even they had crappie minnows in them, what a surprise. If the little crappie survive even half of what are being produced, Glenndale should b hotter than hell in the next couple years. I tried all over the north side from the boat ramp, but maybe need to move a little further east. Edge is very soft and need to get a plank, at least 12-15 feet long out on it now and keep moving or its going to be way to soft to get out on. Must be filling up faster than normal.

My son and I went to Glendale two weeks ago and caught some planters. My son broke through the ice at the edge and got his leg wet so we packed it in early. However, when we got home and cleaned the trout, they had what appeared to be small largemouth bass minnows in their stomach. Should've got a pic.
Has anybody tried minnows as bait in Glendale? I know they have to be dead and all but just thought it might work...

A number of years ago a friend and I fished Twin Lakes through the ice and my friend caught about a 2 or 3 pounld trout that had a stomach full of baby 1 inch bluegills. Seems rainbows are oportunistic feeders.
