Bear Lake Success
#1
Was on Bear Lake this last Saturday at about 8:30am dodging all the ice on the east side, finally found a nice warm cozy spot and had a ball. We started catching cisco right off the bat, then I decided to try out my knew jig that James from 'maniac custom lures' gave me to test on lake trout. WOW, I have never seen a fish so adimant about taking a hook like that. I was really amazed at how aggressive those lake trout were toward this jig. We fished until 2:30pm, and by that time I had caught the two macks one being 10lbs 3oz., and second being 7lbs 6 oz., my father-in-law and friend each had caught 2 cutthrout, and between all of us we had caught 60 cisco and kept 40. Great day at the Bear. Best I have every had.

Sorry Otis90 you are not allowed to post links until you have made 15 post.

Currently on maniac custom lure's website you can only purchase 2"-3" minows. I talked with James and the 6" minows will probably be added to the website within the next few weeks. [cool]

We are going to BBQ the biggest fish up for this weekends Super Bowl. [Wink]

Welcome to the site Otis90, I see you have been a member for a couple of years, thanks for getting that first post out of the way[Wink]. Great report, I'm sure we must have seen your boat up there last Saturday. Were you in the jet boat or one of the other two boats? Please take the time to read the rules of BFT, they are listed above under FAQ. James is a valued member and sponsor of BFT events, so I'll include his web site in this post but you are not allowed to have links untill you have made 15 post. That's a tough deal ain't it. I don't know where to find Utah's fish stocking record's but I believe it is zero lakers, and not enough cut's. Idaho planted 8000 mack's in '08 and not a single cut. And the odd's of a native cut is not good and a mack is nil. It doesn't take many dinners to wipe out what few fish we have left there.[:/]

That's why I love this website. You can't keep a fish, you can't say the size you think it is or you get the shaft from all of the pro's here. How lucky we are to have so many experts here. Hopefully some day I'll be as perfect as them.
If people want to keep a fish and it's legal, get off of their back. I hope that barbecue is awesome and very tasty. Enjoy!!

Since 2004 at least, Utah has only stocked Bear Lake Cutthroat Trout in Bear Lake. Zero Lakers are stocked, as they are looked on as a threat to the native cutts.

Kicknbass is right, the Utah rules are set for an angler to keep fish including macks. While I release the macs that I catch. I for one love to keep smallies and largies, especially the larger ones caught on waters where the proclamation states I can keep them.

why is it that since they cut back the lakers, the cutts went down w/ them. 15 years ago you couldn't have asked for better fishing for either one.

It just gets me excited when people try to make other people feel bad for what they caught, what they kept, or if they were off by a little bit on size. Everyone has their own idea of things and their own opinions. Is it useful to put them down or make them feel like they are a terrible fisherman. Let's congratulate them and give some positive feedback. I notice no one really says anything if it's a puny fish, but boy if it's a trophy all of the 'experts' come out of the wood works. Isn't that what being a sportsman is all about.

Just for the record:

My post said nothing about a person keeping fish as to being a good or bad thing. All I posted was a comment on asking if they were kept for dinner. I have eaten Mac's and cutt's from bear lake and was simply making a comment more related to "whats for dinner" capacity..........I meant in no way to judge or degrade a fellow angler.

Also, I now choose to release all trout that I catch from Bear Lake unless they are hurt and legal. It is my choice but I do not judge others for keeping a legal limit if that is thier choice.

There are members on this site that are partial to the lake trout especially if they are of any size. I too would rather let them go for another day and tend to agree with them but I understand and accept it if a person wants to keep them to feed family and friends.

Me personally, I think trout are nasty eating and would prefer pan fish or something from the ocean (halibut) for tablefare. Steaks are always an option too! LOL

OK, off my soap box, just wanted to clear my name and post if anyone was thinking that I was stirring the pot.

**This is exactly why I don't come to this site much anymore, I am a long time member and it has turned into a place where too many people read waaaay too much into what people say**

Fish1on OUT!

Eat up I don't care, as long as the rest of you are satisfied. Let's just wipe out the lake and turn it over to the water sportsman. What's happened over there in the last years, I don't go anyway. I would sure love to relive the years of fishing with Grandpa though. I just think that Utah's fish and game needs to get a better program going for both fishing and hunting, thats why I moved to GODS country ID.

Wow, things sure got wound up since I left. I would have to say that all the posts have made pretty good points, and it boils down to the fact that we are all fellow anglers and should probably try to combine what we know and believe. I think it's pretty well finished off with what Redbeard1 says about the way the lake has been managed. There are many ways people can think about it, but he is right, the fishery has gone south, SEVERELY. Anyway, I enjoyed the reading, and I apologize if I made anyone feel bad about their catch. They were some dandy mack's.

The fishing would continue to get better if the ice would stay off for about ten years.

Wow, sounds like I hit a nerve with some of you here on the board about keeping a couple fish. I didn't think it was that big of deal to keep a couple fish for dinner especially when the regs say you can keep 2 trout at Bear Lake. Not that you always have too. I appreciate your input and helping me look at the situation from more than one point of view. Good luck to all, and Happy fishing.
