Tons of Kokanee at Ririe-Presidents Day Report
#1
This morning I left the house at 5:30AM and made it Ririe around 6:00. We had all the poles and the ice house up by 7:00 and then it was just a matter of waiting for the Kokanee to come through.

We didn't have to wait long the Kokanee came in strong at 8:00 and hung around for the better part of two hours.

My neighbor and his five sons limited out before my wife and two younger sons along with two cousins even showed up. It was not long after that when we all had our limits. We cooked a good chili lunch on the stove and headed home around noon.

Besides the Kokanee we caught two perch, five trout, and a crayfish.

Overall this has been an incredible year on Ririe.

I had decided to get away from the mass of people by the island even before leaving home. I saw someone with a limit as I was heading down the ramp about 8:45am. It was very slow for an hour then I caught a single [#000000]kokanee [/#000000]and it was the only thing on the graph other than my jig. A little while latter a trout. I could hear your cousin about his [#000000]crayfish[/#000000] catch. Sounded like they had a good time. Then caught two more [#000000]kokanee[/#000000] and lost several others as the schools moved through. I tried some holes a couple of hundred yards away to check the depth then [#000000]jigged[/#000000] the lure a bit. The [#000000]kokanee[/#000000] came swimming right over and were there most of the time for an hour. I tossed back a dozen or so and kept enough to fill my limit. It was interesting to watch them follow the lure 10 to 15' up from the school as was I was [#000000]jigging and reeling[/#000000]. Then see how they reacted depending upon what I did. Most were between 25 and 35'. It is a lot easyer to learn what works and experiment when they are around than what doesn't when they are no where to be found. They were 12" give or take 1/2".

It is fun to watch the Kokanee on the vexilar and see how far they will come to the lures. Today they were rising or falling 10-15 ft from where I originally graphed them to hit the lures. In other words they were very aggresive today.

I had schools come through anywhere from on the bottom at 43' to 15' under the ice. Then when we started catching them they moved right under the ice at times.

Thanks for the report.

I wish you could have come out today as well. The action was a lot like it was on Sat. except the perch were even tougher to catch.

Thanks for making me jealous [frown]. I've got to take my nieces back up there. I took them up there two weeks ago but they could only stay for 2 hours and they didn't catch any. There is probably no better way to get kids excited about ice fishing than to get into a big school of Kokanee. Love the pic of the crawfish.

[Smile] Great day of fishing windriver. Good wholesome activity for all involved.

Were you fishing on the east side (landing side) or across the res. on the west side?

We tried the herring rig, but the fish came in so fast and furious that I didn't even think about it until it was about time to go and then they were gone so we didn't catch anything on it. I am sure it will work again. If I get a chance to go out again I will prerig a couple poles with them so that I start out prepared.

It will be fun to see how many can be landed at once when they are biting really aggressive. Then again they might just break off if too many are hooked at the same time.

I wonder if they were so aggressive because the air pressure was dropping due to the in comming storm?. I have never good luck right after a low pressure system passes.

I was just behind you I think towards the bank about 75 yards and from what I saw and from who I talked to, your group was about the only ones who did catch any thing. I saw them hit your poles time after time but I like totally got skunked and I know many other who did too. Talk about jelous. Wish I knew what the set up was, I tried everything that had been talked about on here before and nothing worked.

My grandson and I sat on the ice from 6 till 1 and caught one sucker. real disappointing. Not sure Ill go back till I can figure it out. Its hard to keep a young one happy when he sees a group like yours hitting and we can buy a bite. Any how way to go and hope you can do it again.

I headed up to Ririe yesterday afternoon and it looked like a small city had set up. We avoided the crowds and set up about 200 yards from the marked border. I saw my buddies line twitch once. We didn't see any fish caught after that. Everyone we talked to said it was extremely slow. We ended up moving around about 4 times with no better luck. We did make a snow man at one point hoping it would appease the fishing gods but no luck there either. I think this year just isn't my year for RIrie. I have yet to catch anything other than one trout and a sucker and I've been out there probably 6-8 times! I'm really starting to want ice off so I can at least catch some bass. lol.

You cannot get to Ririe from Ogden.[sly] Its about 10 miles east of IF. Just off the highway if you were headed to Jackson.
