A good friend and I took our boys up to Rockport for a bit of ice fishing yesterday. There weren't too many folks there considering it was a holiday, and it was fairly easy to get a spot away from the crowds.
We started in about 10-15 feet of water and managed one rainbow about 15" in length. Other than one or two small hits after that it was pretty dead. We moved out a bit deeper and started fishing in 12-20 feet. Managed another 15" bow that was a fatty and then one small bow that went maybe 11" and that was it.
Bite was fairly light, and the winds didn't help either as they had the poles swaying in the wind. The first bow was landed on a small jig with a wax worm, fished about a foot or so off the bottom. The other two were caught on powerbait fished about 15" off the bottom. It did seem that the powerbait was preferred by the fish, most of the light bites we had were on the dough.
We finally left when the weather turned and it looked like it was going to get ugly. Wouldn't you know it that after we were loaded up the skies cleared and the snow stopped. Typical for Rockport I guess.
Still it was a good time. I forgot to mention that it was my boys first time on the ice and I think he'll be back for more.
