Well, I finally tried The Narrows. The road was really muddy, I was driving a Sentra, and since I've never been up there I didn't know what road conditions ahead were, so I stopped maybe half a mile up the canyon. I messed around with a jig in some deeper runs for a little bit and caught a lot of moss, but spooked a trout or two, so I switched my spinning rod for a fly rod. It wasn't the fastest day ever. I managed 4 browns and 2 rainbows in about three hours, all were about 12". The browns wanted to be rainbows, they were quite silvery, and they jumped a number of times, and the rainbows didn't. Well the first bow fought like a wet sock. The second one was good though. They took a size 12 brown purple ice prince nymph and 16 and 18 dark mayfly nymphs. All flies had tungsten beads, they're pretty much all I fish. It was a lot colder than it looked outside, and as soon as the sun got behind the canyon wall and the breeze kicked up my hands started throbbing and it was time to go. I was impressed with all the wildlife. The deer were everywhere, and I saw maybe 30 turkey and a paranoid duck. There was also a pair of sandhill cranes in one of the fields just outside of the canyon. I'm impressed with the wildlife and the scenery. I'm looking forward to heading back when the smallmouth have woken up. That should be a lot of fun.

nice report. I hate going up there when its wet and muddy like that you usualy end up taking more mud home than fish. spring must be on the way if you saw some sandhill cranes.

It was very squishy, it was a challenge to get changed into my waders without getting mud all over everything. Getting down to the river and back up again was difficult as well with the mud. I saw a pair of crane over by the Bear in Benson last week too. I hope spring is coming, I'm seriously done. And I am having some serious longing for some bass fishing. The coves and back bays of Newton are calling me, but they're still under ice.

I've got something for you- Where I work in Cache Valley, I get light weight rubber mats that are thrown away- they are about 3 ft by 2 feet- I have a million uses for them but 1 of them is a fish mat- you throw then down and then stand on them to put your waders on and just rinse them off later. No mud- no stones- you'll have to let me know where to drop some off for you.

That's a great idea. Yeah, I'll take some off your hands. I live in Clarkston, and I work at Logan Regional, so there are a number of places I could pick them up from. Let me know what works for you. Thanks a ton, that's really nice of you.

Thanks for all the tips, I'll be back up there this week I think, and this time I'm going to concentrate on the walleye and smallmouth. I'm glad to finally have a place fairly close with smallmouth. They're definitely my favorite fish to catch.

Looks like you had a good time. I'll definitely try to make it up there again this week, and this time I'm going to brave the mud and get closer to the dam.
