willard w/ ol coot
#1
me and road got to go up to willard andfish with old coot, today. We were on the water around 6:30 and off around noon. We started off using the usual wiper gear, shad shaped plastics. We were heading over to the light pole when the wind kicked up and in coots boat we did not want to be out there so we headed in for better water. We got to the feed lot and just past it coot hooked into a good sized wiper, which he handed to me to let me feel a wiper and land one. that was it for a while. we headed out to the lightpole because the wind had died down and about half way there he hooked up again, and again he handed me the rod to reel em in. we got out to the light pole and I hook up, and landed the biggest fish of the day. While i was bringing in the line coot pulled out his camera and the batteries were dead so he fumbled around and put in some new ones. he got some good pics and will post them on later tonight or later. the next on to hook up was coot with a nice walleye, it weighed 3 pounds and was 23 inches long, since road had not had a fish he let road land that one. Then finally after a long awaited spell road hooked up to a wiper, it was really small compaired to the rest of them though so we let him swim away. we totalled out with four fish today. I would like to say thank you to coot for letting us ride aboard on his boat ad have a great time with our first wipers ever.

I dont know what the fuss about wipers was though, yeah i would love to comeback on a really hot day, but i thought that they fought slightly bettter than a bass out of deer creek.

All in all a great day on the water, I even saw AFDAN out there and chatted with him for a time.

LOL,Fishboy

If you where trolling you haven't had the excitement of the hit of a wiper yet, when I go I like to cast, and that is when its really fun,I have fished for bass LM and Smallies, even the biggest bass I have caught has nothing on a wiper when it slams the bait coming off the dike,I would suggest you trying to catch a few casting before you convience yourself they dont hit hard,

We caught a few the other day casting and there isnt a bass in the state that hits like a big wiper.

JMOA

TIGHT LINES

now that your out of school will hook up,my boys love fishing for wipers on the cast and cant wait to get out.

TONY: i have nothingon how the wipers hit, they would bend that pole and peel line off the reel, but in the middle of the fight they woiuld just stop fighting, bass dont do that. I will admit, they are ablast to catch and would love to hooke up on a crankong basis but.....bass are funner for me right now.

HA69: you can go after them with jigs, infact i think old coot caught one on a jig, as far as a tube goes, you can drive around the lake and bring your tube down the dike if you would like to.

Had a great time with Road and FishBoy. Road just about got skunked until we decided to try a fluorocarbon leader rather than tying directly to his main line (bright yellow). Then he hooked up on his 1st wiper. It was small but it made our day. FishBoy brought in his first wiper ever also ... and it was a nice one. I had to cut our stay short ... had another fishing appointment up at Lost Creek.

Here's FishBoy's first wiper ... and a nice one it is?

My largest ever walleye ... 23 inches and 3.75 lbs.

Road's first wiper ... kind of small but it counts. Besides, wouldn't want to outdo FB!

Fishboy2... That was a great post thank you. Old Coot.. great pictures and post. Not to start anything with the wiper thing, but I must agree with fish boy. I too feel they are not the strongest fighting fish. Don't get me wrong they do fight to begin with but I would much rather have a nice steelie/salmon on the end of my line for a good fight. Another would of coarse be a mess of gills on ultra light gear. I guess why I say that is for the same reason fishboy2 claimed. A great big slam for a hit but they just peeter out.[Wink]

[Tongue]Wait for a month,Them wipers are skinny and waiting for the dinner to hatch out so they can fatten up,They fight all the way to the net,not just the bone jarring strike, they are sluggish right now.not the like last fall, wait you will see.

Nice pics coot, see ya on the water.

go fish for them in august to octoboer when they are hitting shad. youll see the runs. they dont peter out what so ever. and if you dont think so spool some 6lb test on and see what happens to your lure. this time of year is a different mood for that fish. glad you guys hooked some. but believe me you are not getting the full affect.
