Sunnyside 3/20-3/21
#1
First trip of the season after having to postpone for several weeks due to weather. We moved it up a day to miss the bad winds. Trout fishing was good on Haymeadow, my buddy and I caught about 12 to 15 fish each for a half day on friday. The largest to about 17 inches with most being about 14 inches. Caught some on the infamous Atomic Teasers and some on Kastmaters. Not the best trout trip we had but not too bad at all.

On saturday we fished Cold springs for some very early bass fishing action. Not much to speak of with me catching three bass total and my buddy cathing one very very small one. He got bored and went for trout scoring quite a few on Kastmasters. Smaller than we had caught on Haymeadow, looked like very recent planters for the most part.

It was cold as hell at night but to despite that the camp site was quite busy. Used to be mostly fisherman and hunters up there... seems the ATV crowd is takin over. There were ATV's running around all hours of the day and night. Almost had one kid, maybe all of 8 years old, run head on into my truck when we were heading down to the lake... I am not an expert but should a kid that weighs 80 pounds be on a 250 with no helmet and no skills?? Dont get me started on the generators that ran 24/7.

But still a fun trip, hope to return again soon. I think the trout will pick up when the water clears some. Oh and the roads are in fair shape, I would not take a sedan down there but you wont require a 4x4.

I was at Sunnyside in Sept 08 to do some fishing and dove hunting. Campsite was packed from Thursday on. We had to deal with ATVS running through our site, generators running all night and a few Jerks shooting rifles and pistols. I will say they were at least shooting out of the campsite from inside at the far end but anyone driving to the campsite from the south end was in danger. I couldn't find any rules that prohibit that but it is a common sense thing. I don't know if they were drinking or not. My phone would not work to call Law Enforcement. It pretty much kept us on edge. Just goes back to old courtesy thing. If most people were just a little more courteous in their actions things would run alot more smoother. I do love the fishing at Sunnyside though.

The smaller bass came on plastics drop shot style, the larger one came on a suspending Rapala black and red in color.

There does seems to be a problem with folks shooting guns at the campgrounds up at sunnyside. I talked to a guy who was camped there who told me the weekend before some clowns were shooting AKs into the air like it was freaking Bagdad. Someone must have got a cell phone to work cause the Nye county sheriffs showed up and made the whole party pack up and leave. Gave them 15 mintues or else, "Your going to Ely". Funny stuff but kind of scary. Your not alone with the cell phone deal, they just dont work once you get out of the Phrangant Valley.

Verizon cellular works by the bathroom with one bar standing on one leg.

The installation manager is Dana and I believe they have an address just off the main road that is always staffed. In case of emergencies I wouldnt hesitate to run over to Forest Moon Ranch which is 3 minutes due west of the camp ground (west on the fork in the road just north of the campground) as they have a land line.

nice report and nice fish

Thanks for the tip on the ranch. Nice to know. I met Dana once...good people. Its funny I tell folks that cell phones dont work up there and they freak out... "What if there is trouble!!!?" I say I dont know, what did people do 15 years ago if there was trouble? Handle it. Thanks for the tip on the phone again, nice to know, just in case of you know...trouble. [cool]

I added a bonus shot of my buddy and his monster bass... And a shot of him doing something in a bottle... LOL
