Newton Update 4/8
#1
Did a drive by at Newton today. It is about 90% ice free. A couple of big patches are across the lake. Looks like a person could make it through one but the other is questionable. Plenty of fishing area and the ramp is in the water. I am sure the water temp is pucker up cold! I imagine the fish will still be in ice fishing areas. LC

You just beat me too it, I was about to post Newton ice conditions, and I see you already did. Just passed it about an hour ago, and only one of the ice patches blocks the lake now. I'd imagine with all these thunderstorms coming through tonight that it will be gone by morning.

What do you think the best approach would be for the tigers in these conditions. Was thinking of dumping the boat in one of these days. I have caught a few during the summer but have never fished for them this time of year.

i hit up newton yesterday (tuesday) and don't have a thermometer but it was cold... but i have seen colder. had no problem fishing from shore on the west side, and saw people on the south east side. from my point of view the ice looked like it might have been close to the east shore, but i could be way off, and now with the weather it should be fine anyways... i had one fairly big bite, but my first fish of the season hands got to me and pulled the hook right out of the water [blush] and also saw a musky come up to shore until it saw me and took off. I'm hoping it will be good enough by the end of the month that i can catch some bass before i have to go back home to canada and just catch some tasty eye's

Is the fishing usually good after ice off there and if so for what species

Completely open. The brush is beginning to flood, and the water is getting pretty close to some of the larger trees. Now it just needs to warm up a little.

It looks like it will be warming up pretty soon. I am itching to hit up Newton any day now.

I fished it for about three hours today. Not a bite. Water temps were 40 and the dam and 47 in the shallow north end. Marked fish on the finder and threw just about everything you can imagine and nothing. Maybe it's a little early yet for the tigers???

Does it cost to launch at Newton? And is it easy to launch there if you are fishing solo?

no cost to launch, there isn't a dock but you can pull the boat up on the gravel shore next to the ramp. I wear irrigation boots just to make it easier and make sure my feet don't get wet.

One thing that sucks about Newtons ramp is that when it is low water and you get close to the end of the ramp it slopes to the west pretty good. So loading a bigger boat sometimes can cause a problem!![:/]

Thanks, I have a 17' boat so it should be pretty easy to launch in low water guess I will have to try and go out there next weekend!
