Cat's Me-Owww on Mother's Day
#1
[cool][#0000ff]TubeBabe had to be out of town on Mothers' Day. She missed probably the best catfishin' trip I have ever had. We will probably be able to hear her whinin' all the way from Texas when she reads this report.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Thanks Coldfooter for introducing me to "THE SPOT". [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Met up with Coldfooter and 3M a little after 7 at Lincoln Beach. We drove a ways toward Goshen to a long stretch of gravel beach with a lot of flooded brush along the shoreline. Probably a lot of fish all up and down the area but this is THE SPOT...for Don, Mike and Fuzzy.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Don and Mike advised me that they were only going to stay a short time because of some things they had to do back in town. So, I Saddled up my tube and left them bank tanglin' while I kicked out to try to find some fishies. Water temp 57 at launch with a light NW breeze.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As per usual I was draggin' a minnow on one rod and pitchin' plastics on the 'tother. No hits in shallower water. Kicked and casted out into deeper water. Just as I reached the 6 foot depths I started to see fishies on the sonar and something smacked my minnow. Game on. And it just kept getting better.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I got about six cats in the first hour. Most were "cookie cutter" 23" - 24" chunky mamas. Fitting for Mothers' Day. Actually my second fish of the morning turned out to be the biggun of the day...about 28" and just under 10 pounds. Gave her a big Mama's Day smooch and sent her off to make some more kids.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As I approached some new reed beds just breaking through the top of the water I pitched a tandem plastic rig into a hole in the visible growth. Oops, snag! Oops, not a snag but a double on small white bass. More bait. For several casts into that magic little opening it was doubles most casts, singles on all the others. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Whities are fun to play with, but they were running small so I moved back out into deeper water and resumed trying for walleyes and settling for frequent kitties. It was strange. Throughout the day I did not catch any cats in less than 5 feet of water nor did I catch any white bass in more than 4 feet of water.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I tried all kinds of baits...chub minnows, carp meat, white bass meat. The kitties were down for any of it. Probably caught the most and biggest on white bass meat. Also caught a few white bass on white bass meat. Cannibalistic little buggers.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Don and Mike waved as they sailed off about 11. I had caught over 15 cats by that time. I stayed until 1:30 and caught at least 10 to 12 more. Lost count. Us old folks got bad memories. Kept 3 small ones to fillet.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have no idea how many white bass I caught. I stopped to play with them some more after getting wored out on catfish and starting back in. Picked up where I left off earlier. Caught them on several different sizes and colors of plastics. They weren't picky. Got no pride. Kept a few to replace the bait I used up today.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Water temp was up to 63 when I hit the beach. Still only a light breeze. Terrible. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Was glad to see the fish cleaning station open at Lincoln Beach. Made a brief stop to put the three mama catfish on a weight loss program. Better than messing up the kitchen.[/#0000ff]

Hey Pat,
Way to go, there is some good spots along there also some deeper holes to the east of where you was, I have done real good in past years over there.
Night fishing along there is good in shallow and as you found out the six foot level is where they like to stay after the sun comes up, done good on the walleyes in the deeper hole over buy there also [Wink]
Great job.

Your quite welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it Pat. Its a fairly good kitty hole. Later the real surprises usually show up, those big butt ugly bulls..
After we drove to "the road" 3M got in a battle with a nice hen, 7-8 lbs. sent it back to do its duty. I personally found myself to busy to fish with a rod while strolling the shoreline and netting fresh cut bait.[laugh]

[quote pkred]No carp to release unharmed today Pat?[/quote]

[cool][#0000ff]Nope. It occured to me late in the day that this was one of the VERY FEW trips to Utah Lake in which I have not even brought in a carp scale.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The water is still cool, by carp standards, but a few were splashing in solitary around the shoreline just before I left. A few warm days and they will be all over the place.[/#0000ff]

[cool]I could tell ya, but then I'd hafta....well, maybe not. You just need to wear a blindfold or get written permission from Coldfooter.

The fish were disappointed that you did not come to play too. Check the one in the attached pic. Seems to be saying "Where's TubeBabe?"

[cool]I have not fished that part of the lake for many years. I seem to remember some of those deeper holes. I know a couple of other guys who do fairly well on the walleyes along there.

The water looked good and felt good for toothy critters today, but nary a one came callin'. At least I caught as many walleyes as carp today.

Right on cue, Tubedude. When I was turning on the computer I was thinking that maybe you went to UL today and had a good report for me, since that's where I'm heading first thing tomorrow morning, but I'm taking my boat this time. I'm glad you did well. If I don't come back too embarrased, I'll post up with some pics.

[cool][#0000ff]Does that mean you found some frisky carpinskis?[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I usually start bringing my bow on all my trips about this time of year.[/#0000ff]

Cool you got those cats and so many of them.

I have a question:

I always see some little beads next to your hook when you land a catfish. Do you use those to float your bait when fishing for cats? Or is it superstition? You don't practice voodoo do you?

[cool] [#0000ff]Voodoo? Who do? Not me.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You are right. Those beads have shown up in a few pics recently. Actually, I don't add them for catfish. When I fish minnows in walleye country I SOMETIMES add a couple of colorful beads to help get their attention. Seems the kitties like a little bling too, but they have a nasty habit of swallowing the hook sometimes and making it difficult to recover the beads when I cut the hook off[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]On a trip to Willard a couple of weeks ago, I caught about 3 to 1 (cats) on "blinged" baits as opposed to plain hook baits side by side...using two rods with the same baits. On other trips, I have done better without the beads. I let the fish tell me how they want their meals served.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Yesterday I had one rod rigged with beads leftover from my last trip to Willard. I left them on until I had to cut a hook before releasing a fish and then did not put them on any more. Didn't seem to make much difference. Those kitties were cooperative. They all hit hard, ran fast and fought like demons. I doubt I could have handled catching any more or any faster. As it was I had trouble even casting plastics on my second rod because my bait never lasted very long without being molested.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Boola boola catcha fishy. (Closest I can come to a voodoo chant)[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]A couple of those fish said that I was better lookin' than the hairy faced guy that hooked them last year.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Don't know if you are in Utah these days but we need to plan a night attack on that spot this summer. I'm sure Don would do his part to participate in a kitty smackdown in da dark.[/#0000ff]
