Challenged at Flaming Gorge
#1
I put in three long hard days in pursuit of kokanee at the Gorge and had little to show for it. I fished all the promising spots between Buckboard and the pipeline and could manage only five Koks and five rainbows. Three of the five koks were nice, the biggest went over 3 lb. Water temps were 66 - 70 deg. There was a ton of boats on the water Saturday but I saw just one fish boated. There was so much debris, I suppose due to the high water that floated a lot of stuff off the shoreline, that it was difficult to keep your gear clean. I could not find an effective gear combination. Most koks came at 35 ft on a red and white needlefish. I would like to hear from some of that massive armarda that was out there Sat including the RMT boys.

We fished from 6/21 to 6/27 and had the best luck early in the week. Our best day was Tuesday, boating 16 kokes and few rainbows and macks. The color combinations didn't really matter for us, although orange and blue seemed to be doing better than most others we tried. Most fish for us came from 28 to 42 feet.

Saturday was our worst day for kokes, not boating one at all. We did hook up on a few macks and rainbows. It was combat fishing for sure up around Buckboard where we were, but that is expected this time of year on a weekend.

Conditions were tough for a lot of people because the lake was rising 8 to 10 inches per day. There was a lot debris and the water looked like ice tea to me, especially from Buckboard to Middle Marsh.

Conditions were tough for all of us up there this past week. We had a good day Thursday, Friday was wet and miserable and Saturday was really tough. Came home Sunday morning. Caugt some nice fish and lost some nice fish. As you probably seen in Old Coots post, our laker trip was outstanding.

I think that for the next few weeks the koke fishing is gonna be hit and miss and tough. the riseing waters, more than abundant feed and the Algae blooms and plankton are providing a buffett for thses fish, I think once this slows down and the lake stabilizes, the fishing should be great. I would not be a bit surprized to see the lake record broken again this year if not twice.

Good Luck to you.

[#ff0000]I got into a few of them right in front of the buoys at Kingfisher Island and between Eagle Creek and Carter Creek. Nice size to them this early in the season this year. Krocodiles (the needlefish's fatter ciousin) and Tasmainian Devils were the producers.[/#ff0000]
