I was out on Willard last night about 6 pm -9 pm. Saw the birds diving like crazy in several spots for several hours. Saw a few boils. Went 50' from one. It just happened to start up as we were "flying by". Didn't even scare them down. Hope this doesn't bring on too negative of a response: Didn't even have a pole on board. I was part of the power squadron.
Most of birds and boils I saw were in a line approximately from the submerged Island for about a mile headed to the trees south of the North Marina
I'm more of a wakeboarder than an angler. Is anybody else seeing boils? Is there other fish in Willard that cause boils?

Ya, I always give other boats a wide berth. Regardless of what they are doing. The 150' rule is way TOO close. Don't believe me, go up to Pineview on a Saturday afternoon!
One thing that surprised me last night is most the fishing boats were still close to shore. If I were fishing, I would have tried to get in some of the surface action. It wasn't hard. We ended up there a couple of times on accident. The closest fishing boat was half a mile away, and I didn't see any action from the birds in that direction. You could see the birds going nuts from anywhere on Willard.
Is it productive to work the boils when targeting Wipers?

Oh yea, it is very productive to work the boils but the problem is most people don't know they have started yet. They are in their normal fishing patterns, for a lot of folks that is fishing closer to shore, once the word is out you will see a lot more folks chasing the boils. Thanks for the update on the boils.

I'm not sure those are really boils. The fish that are busting the surface are adult shad, not fry. One of the walleye I caught today had what looked to be a partially digested 1" shad fry. The boils look like adults, not fry.
