Brownlee or Oxbow
#1
I am making the trip across state to brownlee or oxbow the 13TH -16TH with my 4 boys and wife. My boys are 10 ,7 , 5 , 3 and want to catch some crappie and cats. Where do you guys suggest? I see many go to brownlee and some favor oxbow. I was looking into farwell bend on the Oregon side but then discovered no reciprical agreement. So it looks like steck park. Only some reports here about hillbillies have me wondering. I don't see many posts from SW idaho lately so I don't know whats happening there. I have read enough to know that team Quill and idahopanfish may know what to expect, Mabey others too. Any suggestions?

I have heard mixed reports on Brownlee so I can't help too much. The road to steck is usually bad. Lots of washboard. I have not been on it in a while. I pulled my boat on that road one time. Not good! I have never fished Oxbow for crappie or cats. If you don't get any response I could tell you a few good spots for crappie at Brownlee.

I don't know anyting about brownlee, but I will be at oxbow this Sat-next Wed. Last year there were a ton of Crappie right off of the bank and we caught lots of nice cat fish also. I know it changes from year to year, but we are going to give it a try again this year.

We felt like McCormick campground was really nice with shade trees for the kids and good bathrooms and showers.

Ditto on what windriver said about the Oxbow.

We went camping there about 3 weeks ago. The crappie fishing was awesome. We had one person there just to take the fish off faster for us and put them in the live well. Almost every cast you had one on. Sparkly jigs is what they seemed to like. Color really didn't matter.

As far as the cats, someone told me they might have been spawning? We caught a few, but saw several swimming in skools around the top of the water. So I don't know, they should be better when you plan on going.

Be sure to take the ultra light poles, so much fun with those.

I had a great time at steck a few weeks back with my float tube. Bank fishermen were not doing as well. Crappie were not there when I was there, but the hillbillys were. I have never tried it but I was wondering how the fishing was a couple miles west of weiser. Might not be as many HB's. Goood luck to you. Ron

Thanks for the advice everyone, We will look at Oxbow from the sound of it we may fair better from the bank there. Windriver If we do go to Oxbow our dates will overlap. We will be in a 24ft Fleetwood Terry and a maroon 99 suburban. Would be nice to meet you and your Family. My boys are so excited andtruth be told so am I. Crappie are my favorite eating fish and I haven't caught one in 12 years. This is gonna be a good time.

Expect good fishing, We should be at Woodhead the 8th-13th and will be targeting bass. This will be our last trip until late August. Busy, busy, but I can admit we've stayed 22 nights so far in May and June so far. We really only started doing good on bass our last trip in mid June. We haven't been targeting cats or crappie since this spring, so no advice there.
