Short Bear River session
#1
The wife and I decided to cruise the Mirror Lake highway today and hit up a river while we were up there. We ended up at Bear River about 8 miles from the Wyoming border. Mirror Lake looked great but there was just a bunch of people there and I really wanted to avoid still water.

I wasn't out there more than an hour but I did catch a rainbow on a Orange Stimulator and a brookie on a CDC Elk Hair Caddis.

They were definitely coming up for something, maybe if I was a bit more up on the entomology I would have had a bit more success. I don't feel bad though. Another angler came down the river and said he had only caught a brookie in the 2 hours he had been there. Not to mention I just started fly fishing and am happy to catch at least one fish per outing.

Really, wow, that's cool. [Smile]

Actually there was hardly a single fly around. I could see a few that were landing on the water (that the trout we're coming up for of course) but overall I was amazed at the lack of them.

I don't know if it was because of the weather or the time we were there (around 5 to 6) but there really wasn't any mosquitoes to deal with. Actually I didn't notice any at any of the places we stopped, and my car really wasn't covered with many bugs in general.

I agree the first is a cutt, slight color slit and markings.
Try #18 Royal Wulffs, Renagades, and small Hoopers and Ants. The two flies you chose are excellent.
I also have good luck this time of year on SALLY's specially red butts.
And PURPLE CRIPPLES and PURPLE Klinkhammers. Seriously!
Now I am ANTSY to get up there. Thanks for the report!.

Gorgeous! I was up there a few weeks ago for the first time to visit Mirror Lake. Looks like a great time and it didn't look too pressured.

Thanks for the report. Now I've got the jones to get up there, too! LOL

[#000000]Ditto on the pattern suggestions offered, especially by Joni. [/#000000]

One thing I have found in the Uinta streams, especially on the Bear and tributaries is that the fish seem to really like to have the dries float really high and dry. I usually pick patterns that are easy to keep floating high. Wulff patterns work well as does an Elk Hair Caddis. Adams Irresistable is also a favorite. If you don't already, use a dessicant to dry your fly off every time it quits floating high and proud. If you just keep adding gink, it will become saturated and won't float as high.

I have also found that the tributaries (Hayden, Stillwater, East and West forks fish better that the main river. Feel free to PM me if you want some specific places to try.
