Another interesting day at Strawberry on 8/22/09
#1
Met a couple fellow BFTers at a Park N Ride in Orem early Saturday morning with great hopes and concerns (different forecasts were predicting strong southerly winds) about our Strawberry outing. When we arrived at The Strawberry Marina there was a slight ripple on the water, but that was it, so everything looked great. Headed for the recent honey-hole area only to find a boat anchored right on top of the hole.[frown] Camped out far enough away from them to be respectful and set up camp (aka dropped the anchor). Didn't see any fish on the finder, but that is not unusual at Strawberry, because the fish often hug the bottom. Dropped the jigs with great expectations (because of a recent report from a fellow angler) only to find not only did no fish show on the fish finder there were few fish in the area. We moved around several times and still only managed perhaps ten fish. About noon I announced that it was time to go looking. We headed over to the north end of Strawberry Bay and joined a small convoy of boats over in that area and anchored up.

We should have moved several hours earlier. We ended the day with 50 fish landed (48 cutts and 2 rainbows -- with the largest cutt going 22 inches), which is still not stellar, but better than a poke in the eye with a popsickle stick.[:/] One of my fellow anglers wished that we could have caught 51 fish, so that he could have ended with 14 fish landed -- but alas it wasn't to be.

Another interesting twist was the number of fish caught on crawlers, both whole (fished drop shot) and used for the tipping of jigs. We still caught more fish on minnow-tipped jigs than on crawlers, but on most recent trips up there I have tried tipping with crawlers once or twice during the day and done very poorly with them.

We were also pleasantly treated to calm weather until the wind started to blow a little about 5:00 PM.

Another great day to get out on the water with others who enjoy this affliction we call fishing.

Glad to hear you got into them. I also found them to like the crawlers, but rather by accident. I left the little bait cooler with the minnows and chub meat sitting on the swim platform of the boat and didn't see it when I left in the dark, so I only had crawlers for bait by the time I got to the lake. Lucky for me they worked well on the cutts. I think it was only the 2nd time I've tried them. With the rainbows showing up more, it's not a bad way to go. I've heard some reports of some pretty nice bows being caught, but mostly on power bait (whoa, did I really say that nasty word?)

Just when I think I'm about ready to try somewhere else, you just have to post a report like that. Now I have to run up to the Berry again. Guess I've got the Strawberry Fever. I do appreciate your reports. You the man!
