Newton 9/11
#1
[#000050]BigBassaholic and I met up at 5:15 and then went up to Newton. Just as we were getting to the dam, I saw a bunny (the sky was light enough to see anything at all, by then) hopping off the side of the road. Then when we were just getting off the dam, I saw two glowing eyes on a little black body. First I figured it was a stray cat...until it turned to wander off, and displayed the blatant fact that it was a "POLEcat"! Luckily, we left all the skunk-ish stuff off the water.
Air temperature was 43F when we arrived at about 7 A.M. just as the sun was peeking over the horizon.
Water temperature was probably about 65 or so (didn't have a working thermometer), but felt quite warm for lake water and just about matched the feel of my aquarium at home which is set to 70.
We had 3 poles out, with these lures. "My" pole had the middle lure.

At about 7:15, I got the first musky of the day! With as much hype as everybody gave about the fight I'd have (my sister's boyfriend even commented that I'd have to let somebody else reel it in for my wimpy self), it was almost disappointing. Quite a few tugs, but nothing I couldn't handle. This fish we only took pictures of, and forgot to measure. Besides, I felt bad for making the poor thing "suffercate", and wanted to get it back in quick. I was going to gently lower it in, but when it saw the water, got excited and squirmed and...well, I sortta dropped it. But hey, at least it got back home!

At about 9:30, I took over the driving of the boat (rather fun, if you don't count the fact I was anxious about my first time at it), while Don casted towards shore in hopes of getting bass. I don't know the name of the lure, but it was a bright neon green frilly thing with a tinkly/jingly metal disk on it. Didn't bother remembering exactly what time, but he caught a 10 inch one, that I took home to have for dinner tomorrow night.

At 10:40, we were near the dam. Don was just starting to check poles for weeds and make sure the lines weren't tangled and stuff like that. I glanced over and saw that "my" pole was jerking quite a bit. I thought "Hrm...that's not quite how it goes with weeds", so I asked him if that was a bite or not. Sure enough! So he got the pole out of the holder, while I scrambled out from the driving seat. Then we thought maybe it really was weeds, because there was no pull after that...but just when I figured I should reel in anyway and check, there was another tug. We think the fish was probably coming towards the boat. But I did get a little battle after all, as we netted it.
This one we did measure. 12 pounds and about 34 inches (give or take 2", I don't remember exactly...30-somethin'!). Pardon my expression...the sun was in my eyes!

One more circuit of Don driving to continue trolling for muskies, then I took the wheel (I guess he approved of my driving to let me do it again) for our last round of the lake while he tried for bass again. A few times we saw Musky, and presented the lure right in front of their faces (literally!), but nobody bothered. It's my theory that why should they go after a bland (tasting, anyway) plastic lure, when they got plenty of live little bass? There was quite a few schools of small bass, probably only 5 inches and less, around the eastern shore.
What was quite fascinating to watch, is that ever so often a Musky would turn into a dolphin! They would stick their heads up out of the water, and swim along for a few moments.

We finally called it a day at Noon-ish. As it was then 88F, and being dressed in wool long-johns and a thick longsleeved shirt, I was getting rather toasty (and that's after taking off my down coat!). But hey, I was plenty comfy in the morning!

During our fish huntin', we also saw some other critters. A mommy deer and a couple youngin's. I think the bird is a heron of some sort. I also took a picture of the steam coming off the lake...but by the time I figured to do that, most of the nifty effect was ebbing off. But it was still a wonder to look at!

Vivid-Dawn, you sure sugar coated that story... You forgot to tell them that I had two poles to your one and I never even had a bite on either one of mine, You kicked my butt on the water and nabbed two nice musky, and to keep the skunk off my back I figured I better try for some dink largemouth which luckily I caught only one. My only chance for a fish was with you driving and me casting until I found a fish that was hungry... For your biggest fish being only 1.7 lbs in your whole life, you sure dont get that excited over a big fish.... You reel it in like a pro and take some pics and back it goes. I told you this morning your first fish would be more than 8 lbs and I was right. I think the first musky weighed about 10lbs and then second one I weighed at 12 lbs... Now your only problem is trying to catch a bigger fish. That 1.7 lb kitty was easy to beat.

You are right about the musky not fighting much today. When I was out with Daniel, the musky jumped twice before we got the pole out of the holder... then another one jumped clear out of the water at the boat... You had a couple of fish that wanted to come to the boat and get their pics taken with you......

Thanks for the company today and for whipping my butt fishing....

I was just trying to be positive, and point out the good things about the day! Focusing on your flaws wouldn't be very nice, now would it? [angelic]

Plus, I'm not a pro. You had to keep reminding me to keep my pole pointed up. And I was plenty excited, because you also had to remind me to slow down a bit in reeling.
It was plenty fun! In fact, I'm usin' one of the pics for my new avatar...until I get a bigger fish, anyway!

OMG, lol pointing out my flaws.... lol that is funny.... Just because the fish wanted nothing to do with me was not my fault.. The fish knew who the better fisherman was........ I had a great day and thanks for the company... We will fish again soon, after all I have to drop off your walking stick that was forgotten in my truck... Since I am up there of course I will drag the boat behind and we can go fishing again....
That new Avatar does look good......

Vivid, why dont we go fishing again this friday, The wife is going to SLC shopping with a friend so I am going fishing. I must give your walking stick back also... I think we will hit Newton again. You wouldn't mind fishing for them Tigermuskies again would you??? I want to try some swimbaits for them fish... The way they were pointed at the shoreline on the bottom waiting for little ones to make a mistake is perfect for swimbaits. I want to try for Bass also this time... Large bass not small dinks. Same time same place ok...... friday morning..
can u make it???

[#000050]You got ESP or somethin'? I already told the cat shelter director that I wanted Friday off, because I was probably meeting you. Though I figured that was just to get my cane dropped off.
I'll bring my water thermometer this time!

[#500000]Holy cow JD, I'm impressed! Those are some whoppers. Looks like you had a great memorable day. I'm glad you got to go with BigBassaholic and got into some bigguns. I think I still owe you a fishing trip too, I haven't forgotten [Smile]. Maybe we could go after some big cats in Utah Lake (now that you've proven you can take on the big brutes). [/#500000]

[#000050]Don - My dad is apathetic, as usual. I think he's mostly impressed that I was awake and active before sunrise! LOL My sister's boyfriend seemed impressed that I actually did get some. He was also surprised that we trolled for them. I thought that was the only way! So I asked what other method there is, and he said "I don't know. I don't know anything about Utah fishing" ...which didn't exactly answer my question. Maybe he misunderstood it.

MC - Yay! Hopefully I don't get suddenly busy, like last time. So far my calendar looks clear until the end of October.

Casting to them similar to casting for bass.

[cool]Hey after reading so many reports here the past year or two of you getting skunked every time, it's GREAT to hear that you not only got into some fish, but BIG fish at that! Congrats!! It sounds like you had a very competent guide to get you into 'em! Hope your luck continues to get better like this!
