Steelhead fishing question...
#1
Hey guys, I was wondering if anybody has tried fishing for steelhead with a regular rod and reel set up? I just have like a 7 foot ugly stick with a nice shimano open face reel. I really want to try to go steelhead fishing but the wife says I can't buy a new steelhead rod and reel. Sad

I have caught a 33 inch, 23 pound brown trout on it before, so I was thinking why couldn't I catch a steelhead on it?

Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!

i fished next to a guy last year up in stanley that was using a 6"6 ultra light. He landed as many fish as i did, and watching him seemed to have one hell of a good time doing it. but thats up were the river is managable dont know about down below in the big water, but i would think if they could land them on those fly rods you could do it on any good rod.

Look at some old black and white photos of steelheaders and their primitive rods. They caught fish.

Your rod will work just fine to land them. Detecting the bite might be the challenge. A good rod helps you feel the difference between the bottom and when a fish picks up.

every bodys answers are 100% correct when i first started catching steelhead ( i say catching not fishing for because the first couple of years i fished for steelhead i had horrible horrible luck but i was like 12 so.....) i was using a medium action 7 1/2 foor rod and real set up the only down side to it is its a little bit harder to feel the bite so thats why i bought an actually steelhead setup but a lot of my friends still use light gear for steelhead just be a little prepared if you get into a bigger b run fish that is wild they can give you a run for your money those wild fish fight harder than the hatchery!!!!
