Bear Lake Whites
#1
The Bear Lake whitefish should be starting to run in the next couple of weeks. Is that about right? Anyone up for a trip on a Saturday after they start? I have no boat, but I make a good fishing buddy anyway.

And you know why you always bring at least 2 Mormons fishing with you don't you? If you bring only 1, he'll drink all of your beer!

Not too sure they will be around the shallows in a couple weeks. I usualy schedule my week long whitefish plans around turkey day. Can't wait, I am sooo looking forward to it.

Just a bit of clarification. It is the Bonneville whitefish that will begin running at Bear Lake in a couple of weeks. They should be "ON" by Thanksgiving weekend and you can almost bank on good fishing the first week of December. I wouldn't be surprised to see some whitefish start showing up even a week earlier. (The Bear Lake whitefish don't start their spawning run until about mid-Feb.)

What are the differences in the two species. (size, taste, etc.) I have heard about the whitefish fishing on Bear Lake, and would love to try it. Is a boat neccessary, what do the eat. Any info is much appreciated! Thanx

Try using the "search" feature and look for either Bonneville whitefish, Whitefish, etc. I've explained it several times and before I do it again, perhaps you can find it. If not, send me another message and I'll repost.

I'm very curious, are you actually fishing for whitefish or does the spawning activity bring the big predators into the shallows after them?
If you are fishing for whitefish, what size of fish can you expect to catch?

The reason I'm asking is that I live in Spanish Fork. I'd come that far for big lakers or cutthroat, but I'm unsure if just whitefish would be justified. Thanks for any information you can provide.

Hey Fish1On,

We met last year at Cisco Beach. Thanks again for the tips! Maybe we can actually make a day of it this year. Are you available?

Yes I remember meeting you as well. Shore fishing for the whites is a little tougher than from a boat. More snags in the rocks and loss of gear. I have a couple new ideas to try out this year to help that and I plan to pour up some more of my go to jigs this coming week.

My boat is still ready to go but the East side is a little less forgiving if (I mean WHEN) the wind comes up. I often times chicken out and bag the boat thing and fish the shore.

I have the 4th week of this month off (21st-29th) and I plan to be up there, weather and chores permitting.....

I am but a PM away.

I have my own beer too! LOL
