I can try to help you out before you take it to the shop but if you don't want to deal with it and depending on were you are in the state PC laptops are good some locations better than others also Best Buy & Comp USA will fix it but they charge a premium. Best bet would be find a local computer shop in your area most don't have the overhead as say a Best Buy so save you $$$ and have more time to closely work on your PC.

I'll Send you a PM

I've had real good luck with Geek Box on 7800 S about 2600 W, North side of the street in W. Jordan.

A couple easy things you can do -- go out to www.lavasoft.com and download the personal version of adaware and run it - it might take you a little while depending on how bad your computer is infected.

Then purchase Semantic or Norton anit-virus at Sam's or Costco or EggHead....

This approach will at least get your PC up & running and give you Virus protection for a year..

Good Luck....

[cool][#0000ff]It helps if you know the name of the virus and can research it online. Sometimes there are free solutions.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I just went through a MAJOR problem with a rogue virus called Antivirus System Pro. It kept popping up messages that my computer was being attacked by viruses...but by buying their software I could fix it. The software was an invasive problem itself. Of course I did not download but in checking on the internet I found a ton of other "software" offers that could help me fix it...or NOT...for a price.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I finally got smart and went in on my Norton Help Desk. Got an online chat going with the help desk in India (drives me nuts). Had to have them come into my computer remotely and search out and delete all of the the different files and registry stuff the bug had already set up on my computer. No way I could have ever done it myself. And neither of my two antivirus programs could detect it or remove it. Everything is working fine now.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You really do have to be careful about how you remove some of that stuff. If you delete the wrong files you can crash your computer. Get qualified help. It costs money but it is worth it.[/#0000ff]

Hey Craig my Norton anit-virus recently expired, is it a good idea to renew it or is there one that is just as good but cheaper to buy? Thanks

You have probably seen a ton of different available virus protection packages - some cheap to complete suites for up to $100

My laptop runs symantec and Norton's been around for a long time.

Good place to compare prices in www.amazon.com and enter "anti-virus software" into the search field and it will bring back a dozen plus different available software solutions.

I do know if you configure the anit-virus to check for updates everytime you start your laptop/desktop it will make booting up very slow - I would check for updates weekly and run a full scan weekly too - but that's just me.

A lot of times just bringing up the task manager and looking at the names of the processes and then googling them you can find out what virus has infected your PC. And there are usually instructions for removing them on the internet but some folks aren't very tech-y so stay within your comfort zone - sometimes a few $$ will save you a few gray hairs but then I ramble [crazy]

I have Norton and they did a remote check and couldnt find a virus. I uploaded Windows Defenderand it found 2 trojan virus. Then they wanted $99 to remove and another $40 to tune up my pc it with a 7 day guarantee !!! SO whats the purpose of an antivirus if it does not protect your computer? Did they charge you?

[cool][#0000ff]Yes, I paid the $99 to have the virus removed.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I too was unhappy about having to pay for something that I expected my antivirus program to prevent. But, I know enough about the modern world of computers and the Internet to know that there is no single program that is capable of catching everything. New threats pop up every minute of every day and the software companies work hard to discover them and send updates to their subscribers. But the help might not arrive in time and you might get infected. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The other side of the issue is that those who create these spywares, malwares, viruses and trojan horses are insidious. They often have extremely skilled people devising them and coming up with ways to avoid detection and removal. When I researched the virus I had, there were pages on the internet about it. And most said the same thing...that it was nasty and hard to get rid of.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Computers will be the death of civilization. I watched a program on 60 minutes the other night that told about all of the hackers getting into some of our country's most sensitive computer systems...in spite of the best firewalls, password systems and other protective measures. In one case, a hacker got into the pentagon's most sensitive defense program and stayed online for days, observing the inner workings of our defenses. In another case a hacker was able to break in and download the equivalent of the national library of congress in information from our most sensitive databases. It has been proven that China and other "entities" have infiltrated the national power grid and could probably shut down the whole country with a couple of well planned computer sabotages. They showed one clip of a planned sabotage test, where a hacker went in and destroyed a $27 million piece of equipment at the nuclear test center in Idaho...all by computer.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]When I heard all that stuff it made my stinking virus problem seem kinda small. Irritating but small.[/#0000ff]
