I contacted Glenwood just outside of IF today and they told me that they don't smoke Steelhead. They also said that they didn't know of anyone in town that did.
I'm looking to get some fish smoked and am not sure where to take them. Does anybody know of a place in Idaho Falls that will smoke fish?

holy cow chris good to see you on again man. Ball Packing on the corner of pancheri and yellowstone you know where 17th turns into pancheri when it goes under the railroad tracks and across yellowstone and that shell station on the corner there is a sandwich shop in the blue building next to the shell station well its in the same building as the sandwich shop just around back go to the shipping office. they do a really good job and its pretty cheap. if i remember right from last year it was only like 6 or 7 dollars for an average sized steelhead

I know this does not answer your question, but you might consider smoking your own. Even the cheap smokers do a good job. With all of the information and recipies on the internet available it doesn't take that much to do a really good job.
Steelfisher (my neighbor) has smoked my fish in the past and it is excellent.

Windriver is right on. You can buy a Little Chief smoker for under $100, and can not only start smoking your fish, but can also do jerky, ribs, etc. Everyone that has one loves 'em, and it will pay for itself in no time. You'll never want to eat commercially smoked fish again! Mike

I was under the impression that a nice smoker was much better, but am having second thoughts about that notion. I'll have a look at those inexpensive models.

the pros do a better job in my mind but smoking it yourself is alot of fun also. and like they said you can do ribs, chicken about anything we have even dont hamburgers for 15 min the finish them on the grill. the fish are very good i did a salmon fillet the other night and i think it rivaled any salmon i have ever had.

Walmart sells a propane smoker- you have to go on line and it's delivered to the store for a little over $100
Propane is much better than electric unless you go very expensive. Heat control is much better and you need than as winter comes

I'm on my third big chief smoker and intend to wear it out so I can get another. If you can work up a good brine that suits your taste then it should work on most smokers. Smoked fish and cold beer....good things! Mike

i have had fish from a expensive smoker and had it out of a cardboard smoker and cant tell the diffrence, its all in the brine and seasonings.

The brine is a major portion- but a good smoker vs a cheap smoker is a definite portion also. Not so much in the warmer months but in the cold months it is a huge difference in heat control. I have had everything from a little chief to a fridge turned into a smoker to a more expensive smoker. There is a difference for the guy who is doing the smoking and when doing roasts, turkeys- things that take longer than an hour or so. If you going to get into it do your self a favor and get a decent smoker right out of the gate. Get on one of the smoker web sites also. Some decent ones out there that will email you brines, etc for everything every month or so. Most fish you don't need to brine longer than an hour.

Cabelas ad in today's paper has Big Chief smokers on sale for $99, normally $149. I certainly disagree with prior posts that you need to buy a more expensive smoker, and that the Big Chiefs don't perform well in the winter. The Big and Little Chiefs are the number one seller in Alaska--nuff said. If the temp. is low, they suggest you simply place the smoker in the box it comes in, or you can purchase a cover that is insulated. The Big Chief operates at a hotter temp than the Little Chief. In regards to the comments about turkeys, etc., you want to finish them up in an oven anyway. Mike

Cabelas black friday add has a stainless masterbuilt smoker w/ glass door $229.99 and Bass Pro Shop had the black one for I think $130. Both were electric and had tempture control 100 to 275 degrees. I have looked at then but do not know how good they are. I smoked a steelhead today but had to finish them in the oven with the wind we had. Mine is home made with 1/2" wood sides.

There is the difference for sure - having to put the box on it. I had a steel garbage can that someone had shot with a shot gun- - had the ventilation alreadty built in and it worked- but I don't lit messing woth stuff if I don't have to . That- Cabela's deal is a good deal. But as far as lasting a long time and just making your life a little easier- it's like fishing gear, hunting equipment- etc etc- buy quality and you won't have to mess with it or replace it- other wise you will be buying it again in 5 or 6 years.

Anybody own the Brinkman Electric Smoker/Grill? I know it is cheap ($70 @ Home Depot) but wanted to know if it's too cheap to even consider it.

I just used my neighbors (Steelfisher) Brinkman smoker. It did well for the Kokanee. It cooks hotter than the little chief. It took me two hours and fifteen minutes to smoke the kokes. The first batch I burned bad because it usually takes me a little longer with the little chief.
