im just curious. i see alot of you guys and gals are hurting for there to be enough ice on these lakes to fish, im curious as to what draws you to them? just like Trout_Slayer, youll be hard pressed (harhar) to get me on the ice...... or should i say we will get on the ice when hell freezes over (har again). aside from sitting over water that could be anywhere from 10 to 100 feet deep in a little shed, possibly drinking an adult beverage, why do alot of you folks find it so much fun?

I like to get my fishin fix in the winter time. And it's a lot of fun, new challenge. I use fishing as an outlet from the stresses of life. I still get stressed in the winter time too.

Have you ever tried it?
For me it is just another chance to get out and go fishing.
For some they are able to fish spots that they might not ever be able to fish because they dont have a boat.
Another thing I like about it is if you can find fish you cant stay on top of them and really be able to target schools. (sonar or underwater cameras make this even more entertaining to me).
Its pretty cheap for the most part. As far as rods and tackle go.
Their is just something about pulling a fish out of a hole that makes me want to do it again.
It is a good thing to do with a couple buddies or kids that can keep you occupied for hours on end without having to worry about much else besides the fishing.
It can also be a little like tailgating on the ice with fish fry, beer, catching fish. ect.(some people are a little more serious about it)
So we going ice fishing this winter or what!!!!
I can spout off a couple more reasons why it is popular for me and a lot of others out their if your not convinced yet......LOL!!![ ![Tongue Tongue](https://bigfishtackle.com/forum/images/smilies/tongue.png) ]

So long as you are prepared. Its not so cold. And a hole in the ice is just like a camp fire. I can sit around on all day. And shoot the breeze.

I know for me it's the only time that I get all of my brothers fishing at the same time. Also, you don't really have to be an expert to have a really good day. Any other time during the year, requires some fishing experience before going out and doing well. With Ice fishing you can just put a worm and still have a good day. Of course why the fish eat a floating worm in the middle of the winter is beyond me.
I personally don't care for it because it's just too cold. However any opportunity to go fishing is worth it. I also have had some of my best (number) days ice fishing.

I flyfished during the winter for years. After a particularly cold day on the madison having to suck on my ice guides every cast I thought, "There has to be a better way." Sitting in a nice tent with a big heater blowing on me watching fat 2#-4# lakers or cuts chasing my tube jig around on my sonar turned out for me to be the better way. Plus fishing at night is just as effective. When I get off work at three the day is still relatively young but it is almost dark. All I have to do is hang a lantern in my ice fishing tent and it is light for as long as I want.

You won't know unitil you try it. [ ![Wink Wink](https://bigfishtackle.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.png) ]
Last year was my first year trying it and now I am hooked. I am going to buy a shelter, so I can spend all night out on the ice, that way I can drink as much as I want. ![[Image: sleepy.gif]](http://www.bigfishtackle.com/images/gforum/sleepy.gif) ![[Image: bobwink.gif]](http://www.bigfishtackle.com/images/gforum/bobwink.gif) If you have a good chair and a heat source, it is really comfortable. Ice fishing with a Fish finder, is a blast.

There is something about seeing the tip of the rod bounce, setting the hook, and wondering what will come up out of the hole. It's sort of like a grown up version of peek-a-boo. I love it!
I also love the finesse of vertical jigging and seeing them come up on the sonar. The underwater camera is also fun, and ice fishing is pretty much the only time that is useful. You can do it cheap, or you can go all out and reap the benefits of technology. I bring the little pop-up ice shed, catalytic propane heater (no carbon monoxide danger with those), and just have a blast.
To this day the fastest fishing I have ever experienced was ice fishing. Some days it is warm enough to fish on the ice just wearing a t-shirt. Other days I find it fun to actually brave the elements and come out of it having caught a slew of fish. Many of my best fish have also been caught through the ice.

I am sooooo with you Kochnut. But then we fly fish (me that is all I do, no switching back and forth)
As long as there is moving water, I will be okay through the winter. In fact I like fishing in the snow!
I can't sit for long around a campfire either [laugh]

Nothings more exciting that walking on clear black ice, then looking around your feet...hearing and seeing it crack around you feet and whoooshh, falling thru the ice. That numbing-shocking cold rush that comes thru you as you hit that chilling water knowing that you may never be able to fish again if you don't get out right now.
Also, the run to the car as your pants start to stiffen up, and realizing that you only brought 1 pair of pants and underwear - the one you just got wet.
These are tales to tell generations.

Very simple for me. Would you rather sit down in the valley in a temperature inversion or be out on the hard deck doing what I love to do in the clean pristine air of the outdoors.

Well for me theres mainly two attractions.
#1. I can remain dead still over a fishing location.
#2. While standing on 2 inches of ice over 100 foot of water and in a hung of war with a 30-40lb Mack,, and having the ice sinks a inch or two with each hard pull, it tends to give me a rush.
Other than that I'd probably stay home and get toasted all winter.

YIKES!!! did we just cross the line or what[blush]
Just because we aren't sitting on the ice in the nice crisp clean air doesn't mean we aren't in that same clean air, only standing in moving water.
And on occasion, we even get to see the take...what a rush.
