Ririe 1-01-10
#1
Started out real good when we got there about 8:30, started catching so many I was throwing them back waiting for some 15". After about 15 minutes of non stop action they cleared out and it was another 2 hours before we saw any more fish. And then they wouldn't stay around long enough to catch more than 1 or 2 fish. We left at noon with our limits of 12". Saw a lot of people pulling fish out but they didn't seem to hang around long at their holes either. Hopefully it gets cold enough to thicken that ice up a bit so we can explore around for some perch.

I took my 2 boys today but we must have missed it. Had to wait for the oldest to come home from a sleepover and didn't make it to the reservoir until 10:30. It was really slow with only a few fished marked until noon. For 15 minutes we had great action with about 5 schools coming by in that time. All were between 9-12' deep. It was hard for me to try to take care of both boys at the same time or we could have done more damage than we did but we did pretty good and the kids had a great time. Average size was up from last year so that was a plus.
Were your fishing hitting anything in particular? My 10 year old had a whiteish Hali jig and he got hit first and hardest everytime we had a school come through.

I will be there tomorrow, but not until noon. I have family obligations in the morning. Hopefully I can find an afternoon bite.

Has the ice increased in thickness from the 4" that it was? I am wanting to head up there, but prefer 6". Any body been into the perch good? Or know where to find them? I have never targeted them specifically at Ririe, they have always been a byproduct of trout/bass fishing.

I'm thinking I'm going to try and hit it tomorow morning before the little one wakes up. Probly fish until about 10. I'll keep an eye out for you and your stickers Chrome Junky. Now I just need to clear it w/ the boss of the house![crazy]

The ice was not more than 4" yet. It is really good clear solid ice though.

The perch are out there and there are some huge schools. Look for mud flats adjacent to rocky shore lines. The perch tend to be on the mud flats eating little bugs that come out of the mud.

Last year my best day was 26 perch over 8".

It didn't seem to matter a whole lot. I did notice these past two days that I had one pole that never got hit even once, and I think it might be because I have 10 pound ice line braid crap. All my other poles have 6 pound clear line. We caught fish on swedish pimples and ratsos plain hooks paddle bugs you name it. I do think it is easier to hook them with a small trebble but I switched over to single hooks when I wanted to try to keep only bigger fish. The trebbles were really hard to get out without ripping some lips off. So in my opinion the best jig, lure, and hook to use up there for kokanee is the one you have tied on your line.

I will have to look for the mud flats. I was thinking between the rock pile and shore, but who knows. I have caught quite a few at Blacktail in the summer, but that is easy to find the mud flats in the shallows there. I may just have to take a drive up there and check things out. AF is getting boring and the perch are getting smarter and smaller.
