I've been enjoying reading TubeDude's walleye writeup and getting ready to apply what i've learned: ) But after reading it I thought that a lot of the lures and tactics used to catch walleye are the same tactics you'd use to catch Large mouths. Since Utah Lake isn't a lake known for it's cover, where do the LMB and SMB hang out? I caught a big one west of the "L" in between the little dikes that line the road there for a mile or two, but it was an accident. I was jigging for walleye and caught the pig right at the shore. Anyways any info. would be great. If you don't want to divulge some of your secrets to everyone feel free to PM me, that is if you're willing tell me your secrets[ ]

No SMB in UL to my knowledge. Stick to the eyes and whities. The large mouth fishing isnt all that good in Utah lake and whatever you do turn all the LMB loose. They are loaded with parasites, especially the large ones.

We have only caught 3 total in UL.
1 in Lincon Beach harbor using standard grubs.
1 in saratoga springs public marina on a silver blue fox
1 in American fork harbor near the reeds on the west side.
I dont know where they hide, but they sould bite the same gear being fished in the same areas as other species. I ended up releasing all 3 due to the size restrictions, and I dont want just 1 fish for dinner.....especially if I have only caught 3 in UL. I just dont think there is enought to target them, although I am sure some here will say otherwise.
Here is a pic of one in Saratoga caught by my kiddo last year.
Shawn
EDIT : They were all LMB, I have never seen a SMB, but who knows.

try fishing in and around the marinas around any cover you can see. 3\8 oz. black and blue jig-n-pig, tube jigs, senkos, spinnerbaits all have caught me some good lmb.

Hate to disagree with the post about Utah Lake being a lousy LMB fishery, it is in fact a great one. Learn to flip and then start working the reeds, emergent vegetation. You will be startled at what is there. You can catch them on cranks, spinnerbaits, Senko's, etc, but the best bait is a blue/black 3/8 - 1/2 oz jig with either a pork chunk or plastic trailer. This year I am going to start using some punch baits and see if they work better. Don't care if they do have parasites, I let em all go any way.

No,no,no,no,no. You guys are right. The LMB fishing at UL is terrible. Don't even bother.[ ][ ] But if you do, you have received some good advice. I am partial to dark or two toned (dark body/chartreuse tail) plastics fished as Therapist described.
With regards to the large ones having parasites, what does it matter? The regulation at UL is that all LMB and smallies (yes, they are indeed there in low numbers) 12 inches and over must be immediately released.

lots of largemouth bass in UL... Last year I was fishing for bluegill and crappie (caught limit of both) and caught about 6 largemouth. Flipping around the docks and reeds inside harbors works best for me...

I don't catch them every trip out but have stumbled across a few every now and then. Here are a few pics, including one of a pretty decent smallmouth that LowDown caught a couple of years ago.

Fishkillr, your bass looks like a smallie. [:p] Recheck the bronze back and smallies mouths usually do not project past the eye, where the LMB mouths go beyond and are greener fish. You may have caught a smallie. I have caught up to 6 lb. LMB out of UL. I do not always target them, but Mud Lake is where I go. I know a kid who goes there exclusively for them. He does fairly well.
Just my 2 cents.

The dark baits makes sense since UL is stained water.

I've caught quite a few in that mud lake area and the tributaries too. Especially in the summertime

Oops[crazy]The flash shining off the fishes scales make it a little difficult to see the fish's color. Do largemouths usually have orange eyes like this fish did? It seems like most largemouths have solid black eyes? This fish pictured had orange eyes.

Smallmouth bass do not do good in stained water like Ut lake...

I've caught quite a few LMB around the lower provo river, right before it flows into the lake. Biggest was over 7lbs. Unfortunately, I used see a lot of hispanics take em home too (over 12 inches). I would have to remind them about regulations.
Being a big bass angler, I'm hoping the carp removal will help the population of these warm water species. My dream is to have great bass tourneys on this lake. But until there's enough of them, UDWR wont (and shouldn't) lift the 12inch size limit.
So please, I beg you guys. Release the largemouth bass for the sport.
As already mentioned, they are full of parasites and toxins.

Where is this mud lake you guys speak of? (Provo bay?)
