Solar Panels - Charging Trolling Motor

Has anyone used solar panels / power devices to power on-board battery chargers for trolling motors?

I had a friend that got small Solar panels from BMW's. I guess they use them to ship them over. Anyway he ran 4 in series and his battery lasted very long on his pontoon.
Sorry I have no idea what size the solars were, but guessing 1.5 but could have been 5
