steelhead rod
#1
Hello,

I am planning to do some steelhead fishing for the first time this fall and I was wondering if you guys could give me some advice on a good rod and reel + action of the tackle. I will be fishing mainly hells canyon, the little salmon in riggins and possibly the Stanley area. I can only afford one rod so i was wondering what the best combination would be if i were to fish all those different waters. Thanks

this is kind of a tough one due to the fact the little salmon can be " blown out " and heavy tackle is required, due to the current, rock abrasion ect. i would like to comment 250 $ g loomis rods aren't a necessity ! nor are 150 dollar 10 ball bearing level winds. if it were me i would buy two fairly inexpensive rods . one for heavy work and one for normal steelhead work. however one rod will suffice .. i would recommend a 7' 6" medium action rod with a somewhat fast tip for throwing jigs and bobbers and the like. i prefer baitcasters but spinning works just as well.as for brands ?? i have caught a TON of steelhead on my 60 $ okuma and a 45 dollar abu-garcia level wind. stood right bye my buddies with 400 $ combo's and caught fish around them all day.........hope this helps

I've been using a 8'6" medium action Cabela's Tourney trail/ZXspinning reel combo for years now. I believe they have this combo for $100 w/ a spare spool normally, but I've found it in the bargain cave several times. The Pro guide rods also aren't a bad option and a little cheaper but you sacrifice some sensitivity.
