crabbing at yaquina
#1
Well monday i took a trip out to newport to do some crabbing and fishing unbelieveably the worst crabbing day i have ever had but as all know i love just being out there. Hopefully as the water temps start to go down the crabbing will become better. This day also had more pier crabbers than i have ever seen with from what i could tell 50-100 traps of the pier it was so crowded we could barley find room. I did some fishing and caught a few small perch 2 flounder ans 1 sea sculpin. A very upsetting thing happen to me though i hooked a small perch and a sea bird dove for it and scarffed the fish hooking on to my line . BOy i did not know what i was goign to do i had a 4 oz bank sinker on so i couldnt just cut my line luckly a very brave sole climed down the pier structure to cut the line under the wieght. the bird seemed to be fine and it was luckly a very small hook in his mouth no further down he shook his head for awhile and you would think that dumb bird would go away but can you believe he hung around looking like he was just waiting to steele anouther fish from my line acually diveing a few times needles to say i couldnt handle it and gave up till he went away ...Boy that was some catch glad he is ok.....

I was sitting on the Embarcedero dock on monday, and the fishing and crabbing was unbeliveable! That day alone I caught 17 keeper dungeness, and 10 or so really good sized pile perch.

Patti,

I was interesting in taking my kids who are 4 & 5 to Nehalem bay for crabbing and fishing for perch on Sept 13 & 14 and was wondering if you could give some pointer to the best places to do this in the Nehalem bay. I have my own 13' boat with 20 horse motor, but I have never fished or crabbed there advise?

[Wink]Chromer ,Definatly a great place to take the kids if you are going for the day and the tides are right the kids can also have a great time clamming, cockles are what you would be going for and they are easy for the kids the limmit is 30 clams per person but double check the regs. Cockles are good for clam chowder or fried clams. For clamming take 12 st in garabaldi go an hour to 1/2 hour befor low tide it is only 5-10m minutes from jetty fishey . Cockles you simple need a rake no hard digging there are also horse necks but limmit is 4 and they go deep fast and i dont think they taste well ,good for fish bait. Each clammer are required to dig there own clams and have there own container no liecence required for clamming or crabbing.. As for the crabbing and fishing the best spot would be the jetty fishery you can stay and crab the docs or take out the boat ,there is a day and or launch fee i will send you a link and they have an 800 number ,they can also help you figure the tides if you dont have a tide table and update you on the fishing crabbing reports befor you go. Tthe other nice benifits of jetty fishery are camping right on the jetty with the crab docks right there and they will even cook them for you and store your clamms in the live tank have ouysters and razers you can buy to feast on too.You can picknic with a fire to warm after being out on the water there is a place just at the end of rockaway with huge stacks of wood for only 4$ and believe me they are a good amount of wood. IF you have your own traps great each person is alowed 2 traps per person and keep 12 male dugeness 5 3/4 inches be usre nad have you rruler the check em befor they cook em, redrock crab are 24 any sex and size but i have never seen a redrock at nehalem only yaquina. If you do not have your own traps you can rent them for 6$ a day per trap including bait good for your boat or the docs. Salmon fishing should also be doing great and the fishery employees are a great help. If you ever camp there or go for the day with out the boat fishing from the jetty for perch is a great blast also just be sure to use tiny hooks they have very small mouths clams sand shrimp squid or mussles all work good they have sand shrimp and tackle in a little store right at the fishery. My favorite bait for crabbing is shad but getting hard to get them only place i know is fishermans in oregon city and they cost 3.99 each and will bait 2 traps. chicken or turkey will also work but if i can get shad i feel it has been worth it on occation when ive got crab when no one else has. OR just use what the fishery give you they use ocean fish carcuses form daily catches. IF you ever crab the doc i have noticed the crab seem to congregate better right at the bottom of the ramp near the equipment room old carcuses from the boats are dumped there attracting more crab. IM not sure where to head out in the bay with the boat but like i said the jetty employees are happy to help. The slamon fishing should also be great fro coho and the big hogs will be heading in in a few weeks hopefully mabe be ther big when you are. The jetty fishery is located just a few miles past barview outside rockaway heading into nehalem...HAve a great time and let me now how you do should be good wiht the rains and colder temps coming next week will help get those salmon moveing too Yaaaa. Happy Fishing ,Crabbing clamming and just haveing a great time with the kids. [url "http://www.doormat.com/jetty/jetty.htm"]http://www.doormat.com/jetty/jetty.htm[/url] her is a link fo tides also just enter your criteria for date and hehalem bay[Wink] [url "http://www.saltwatertides.com/cgi-local/pacific.cgi"]http://www.saltwatertides.com/cgi-local/pacific.cgi[/url] oh and im writeing a book here but im sure you know the weather is very unpredictable on the coast and the jetty can be very cold and extremly windy even in summer so dress extremly warm have plenty of protective gear especillay for the young ones and never risk rough seas stick with the docs if you have too, and remember plenty changes of clothes for the young ones lololol[Wink][blush][cool]
