Pineview Skunked story

I hit Pineview Wednesday afternoon because I keep hearing all these stories and seeing pictures of Muskies being caught. Went there with the boat, hit about every spot on the lake, didn't get a single bite. 1 guy even fished with worms and didn't get any bites either, we'd even take a carp just to have some action.

There were fish jumping (and many carp jumping as well). I am trying to post more about each trip I take, it's just tough on my ego getting skunked where others have such great success. I know I'm the only one this happens to, seemed like most of the guys catching fish were on boats so got one of those and learned it can be worse in a boat than on shore.

Not complaining though, Pineview is a must do trip right now though, the waters calm boaters gone and the trees surrounding the lake are changing colors, really pretty.

I fished the view today from shore and did alright! Walked about 1.5 miles of shore and ended up with 4 smallies and 3 lmbs with many missed strikes. Also had the pleasure of breaking off not only one musky but four with my partner breaking 3 more on top of that.... fun morning fishing... will hopefully have pics up soon

Sinergy - all break offs were on a simple tip jig. The majority of the muskies yesterday were the micro muskies planted from last yr, man they punded those tubes, without a steel leader we never had a chance. . My best musky day ever, was about 4 yrs ago from surfer beach on the north east side of the lake over at the pull out past the care takers house, that day was a crazy weather day with snow hail rain and sunshine, we ended up with a total of 9 muskies caught and released all healthy on jointed crank baits. I ended up breaking the bill on the rocks and now have that special crank on my key chain. Man that was an epic day. After work I will see if I can find those pics

was up there yesterday. Fishing from shore had a few muskie strikes and follows. a little bass top water action.
largemouth and smallies. heres a map of the water I was working. Maybe trolling close to shore might work. water is going down so watch for hazards.

I too have been itching to try Pineview. I'm thinking Sunday morning might work - even try my new sideplaners. Now if I can just get up n out EARLY!
I landed my first Musky this year, after an earlier break-off, up at Newton. 8lb test, wimpy little kid rod. Just played it and nursed it - several runs, but it can be done. I was fishing for perch, and he ate my catch. What a Riot!

So what kind of boat did you get? I think a boat (even a little dink like mine) has definitely opened up better fishing opportunities. A fish finder is SUCH a great tool! But it's also dang frustrating sometimes to SEE tons of fish, but not get any bites, but you KNOW they're right there!!!!

Thanks for the report Bryce ;0) Mike and I were up there on my boat yesterday (Friday AM). We never even saw a musky, but ended up catching a bunch of largemouths. I've never seen so many LMB come out of there. Most didn't have much size (10 to 12"), but Mike got one that was over 2 pounds. Between us we got about 35 bass, and 90% were LMB/10% SMB. Usually its the other way around. Later, Fred.

for muskies i would try back in spring creek along cemetary point and down from anderson cove. i just caught one the other day on a spinnerbait. and for bass fishing ive been doing really good in the rocks on cemetary point. lots of largemouth there right now. fish wacky rigged worms and crawbugs slowly about 5 to 10 feet from shore. spinnerbaits have been working for me to. hope this helps

Thanks, hopefully you made it up to Pineview today. I got a Tracker Sweet 16. Has a fishfinder that I installed but I have no idea where it's reading in the water. If you haven't gone to Pineview yet be careful on the North side of the lake and the North East side, watch the depthfinder I hit bottom off a point about 100 yards out. Let us know how it went.

I appreciate all the posts. Hopefully I didn't overwhelm with the responses. This post is a reply to wiper junkie and Wildcat, if there's a way I could do them all at once so I don't post over and over but the people who commented know I replied let me know.

So you 2 had success with LMB in Pineview. I have some questions about Bass. Do they jump? I know trout do, and at Pineview I saw plenty of Carp jump, but saw some other fish jump but couldn't tell what they were. Do pike and bass generally inhabit the same waters as carp? (If so I was in the best spots then)

I've caught 3 fish with Jigs, 2 at Flaming Gorge very small but had lots of strikes and embarrassed to admit this, the largest was a small mouth bass at Rockport I caught with a casting reel when I had a birds nest in it and I dropped the lure in the water to untangle it and couldn't figure out what was going on and reeled in my biggest smallie to date. Jigging and setting the hook seems counter intuitive to what it is for lures/bait fishing (usually for trout). I'm self taught and maybe that's the problem because I constantly lack confidence that I'm doing it the right way.

I'd love to his Pineview or Willard with someone who is experienced with fish that prefer a warmer water temperatures than trout do. From what I am gathering good looking trout holes are definitely not good looking warmer water fish spots and I can't seem to find a spot for those fish, especially with the water level as low as it was at Pineview and Willard is just a big body of water who knows what to look for.

Used the map, had a hit and my friend had a large bass follow his lure in. That was about it. My friend said that I lost what little credibility I had for jigging and bass fishing. I was suprised a bass that large would be in such shallow water so I think he's right.

What time of day was it? You'll find bigger bass will move into the shallows at dawn and dusk to feed on younger smaller fish. But often during the day will migrate to deeper waters. Not sure what the weed situation is like there, but at other holes I've heard if you can punch down through the weeds, you'll find bass lurking below at the base of the weeds, and will hit when things drop and hit bottom.

Plus you get seasonal shifts. Bass/sunfish in shallows during spring spawn. Then move deeper as the water warms. Suspending on ledges, dropoffs too. But come up to feed.
Trout also will react to water temp. They like it colder, so as the surface warms, they move deep. Once a lake turns over in fall, they start hitting the surface. That's what we're starting to see now (orange! Hot color!)



Realize there's a few things not marked on that Pineview map - like the campground. You'll have to credit TubeDude with marking up most of the maps you see. I just share them on when it seems appropriate. He's got some great ones of Utah Lake.

Here's a couple of Willard (*off topic, I know). Been learning there's a lot more structure to the bottom than one might think. Old roadways, underwater "islands", various dips and pockets. Planning to hit it this afternoon with my boy - try out the sideplaner boards. See if I can't coax a Walleye into the boat, or find some phat cats! (I'm not even going to mention Wipers or Boils....)

I think it was another Pineview thread - someone was kind enough to post great details about the depths at various areas of Pineview. (sorry don't recall the poster's handle - give proper credit!)
