Quiet on the Salmon area Steelheading?
#1
Just looking for some reports on the steelheading over by Salmon. I'm hearing a little here and there from secondhand sources but wondered if anyone here has finding them in any significant numbers?

I can't believe how much it makes me feel like a little kid during Christmas time![laugh]

As fast as the fish are blowing through the other rivers, I'm really suprised there aren't better reports coming fro the upriver spots. This fall should be one for the record books up near Salmon. Usually the majority of the steelhead run spend the winter downstream from there.

i agree with mojo, as early as the fish are this year i think there should be great fishing around salmon and even up to challis.

I was actually working in Challis yesterday and slipped over to Deer Gulch and Pashimeroi for a couple hours. Didn't have a single hit, see any steelhead rise, or even see another soul fishing for that matter. I wasn't fishing too hard so there certainly could have been some fish there. I was surprised that I didn't see anyone at either hole.

I'm sure there are fish up that far in the system, but I'm not too sure that it is in any decent numbers yet. I'm headed out for a full day Tuesday to see if I can get into them.

Just got back from North Fork. Fished Thurs and Friday from 4th of July to North Fork. We did pretty good, We landed 8 and lost 9. Hitting everything; plugs, spinners, flies, and roe. We got more wild fish than hatchery and they are big this year. The biggest was 36 inches approx 11 pounds. Did see some others caught but also talked to a lot of folks who didn't touch a fish. They are there and aggressive just have to pound a lot of water.

Nice report B14! I wouldn't think there would be many fish above the July Creek this early. A few always squirt though but the majority should still be below the Middle Fork.

I was told that they have been catching fish up at North Fork since the first week in Oct. We actually caught our first fish of the trip up in Carmen and there are fish past Salmon so they are there in good numbers now. I will be heading back up in another week in a half to hit it hard for a few days and then I will call it quits until the ice breaks free.

It has been pretty slow up here until this past weekend. We picked one fish up just up river above Ebeneazer and then stopped on a few holes between North Fork and Fourth of July and picked up one more and lost 3. The water temps were running warm and the fish just were not moving in. The temps have finally fallen and the fish are finally arriving in numbers. They were very aggressive on Friday and put on a good show. One that I lost came out of the water about 3 feet like a rocket then I got it right at the bank and it looked me in the eye and spit the bait. It was awesome. Will hit it hard again this weekend as I have family coming in to go fishing so I should have more to report.

Thanks for the current info. Was going to head out for Tuesday, but had second thoughts when I found out the river had risen about a foot due to the rain. I look forward to your next post. The next trip looks like the beginning of next week.

We went up on the 22nd and 23rd. Fished both days between Tower and 4th of July creek. We landed a few and lost many more. Landed more wild fish than hatchery. There are fish in numbers above North Fork.

Went out today after work and landed 2. Both were natives and had to go back. Nice and big though. Was a great fight. The natives sure seem like they fight harder.[inline 25784658148_ORIG.jpeg]

Great fish steelfan and yes i agree with you about wild fish fighting harder than the hatchery fish but i have to say something and i m not trying to offend you because there is the possability that you dont know this ....................... .....................but laying those fish in the dirt and rocks before letting them go is not the proper way to release those fish. im sorry to say this but there is a really good chance that those fish will not make it to spawn now.if you want to get a picture of a fish that needs to go back in the water it should go directly from a net that never leaves the water to a quick pose in your hands to right back in the water. again im not meaning to be offensive or start anything with you. steelheading is what i love and i am very passionate about keeping it around for a very long long time so that a may share it with my grandchildren some day. we owe it to those wild fish to make sure they get back in the water safely. especially after the fight they give you on the end of that line.[Wink]

Junky is dead on with his info, leave the fish in the water, quick pic with wet hands, send it on its way. Once you get good you can get a great pic and have the fish out of water for just a few seconds. I've seen wild fish fight like a wet sock and hatchery fish rip someone up. I think it depends on the individual fish more than if its wild or hatchery....
