Talked to my neighbors last night and decided that Mackay would be the best place to go to get the kids into some fish.
We didn't leave early since last time the fish didn't bite until 11:30. Same story different day. We saw fish on the vex and Marcum earlier but no go. Then the fish switched on at around 11:30. There were 7 of us total. We all limited out. The kids had a great time and I am greatful the fish were cooperative. There were quite a few people around us who were not catching the fish, so maybe we got lucky?
We were using small pink swedish pimples. The best rig was small swedish pimples with a pink rat finkie dropper.
Steelfisher is having a problem with his Marcum. A thick red line is spinning around the dial and won't stop no matter what the interferance regection is set on. Anyone know what that means?
Overall a beautiful sunny drive and day of ice fishing. We finished it off by having a fish fry with all three families at my house.

How were the rooads up through Arco to Mackay? My little brother lives in Arco and was telling me it was terrible driving up there? Did you hook mainly the cochs ? I'm glad you had a great trip, I hope I'll be using one of the old shacks the guys pull out there! Talk to you later

Windriver - Make sure the battery is not going dead. My lx5 gets goofy at about 20% power remaining. Also swap the transducer on it from another unit to eliminate that possibility.

I was thinking battery power or bad wire connector.
Nice report WR! I'm thinking you almost have to have electronic eyes to do well at Mackay this year. If you aren't getting bit move to where the water is a different depth. These fish seem to like hanging out over certain depth lines around the lake. Any deeper or shallower and you are out of the fish.

I thought the roads were ok. I guess bad roads are different for everybody. We weren't driving fast, but we weren't slowed down either.
I'll take a pic of the set up later.

I will switch batteries with him to see if that is the problem. He says that he charged it and his charger said it was full. Maybe a bad battery or connection like you said.

Wednesday I was fishing up by the upper boat ramp. I was in 22' of water. I had koke on the vex all day & caught them at 23' up to 5' deep. I got a quick limit of koke and spent the rest of my time trying to catch trout. I could not keep the koke off my jig. I don't think I would have needed my vex this day but I sure would not go with out it. Ended up with 31 fish for the day all but 2 were koke. I fished for about 4 1/2 hr.

Kokes DO count in your trout limit until the end of 2010. New regulations start in 2011 where kokanee are a separate limit of 6.
However brook trout are counted as a separate limit of 25 both now and next year.

I don't think you have to stop fishing . You just can't keep anymore kokanee or trout . I think Henry's lake is one of the few lakes where you have to stop when you keep your limit . Curt G.

Hey Jim I'm interested in catching Kokanee. If you would, let me know what you were using, so I don't buy a lot of junk that I don't need.
Oh and by the way it sounds like you and your friends had a great time.

No you can still keep fishing. I was trying to catch brook trout for our fishing contest. There is a separate limit for brook trout.

I was using about the same thing windriver was. Small pink swedish pimple & small pink tube jig dropper tipped with a wax worm or meal worm.

As far as I understand it you can keep fishing for the brook trout since they have a seperate limit.
The two we caught the first time were nice ones. I believe Steelfisher caught one the second trip.

As long as there is a separate target fish from the limit you have you can keep fishing. For instance, limit of Kokanee at Ririe and you switch to targeting Perch as many do.
I am a firm believer in using the Swedish Pimple as an attractor and then jigs of different sorts for the target fish suspended under the Pimple on a leader of 10". Pink Rat Finkes (doubles) for Kokes. M&M jigs and Atomic Ants for Perch, Paddle bugs and others for Trout (with a 20" leader) as well as other variations for the Trout and Perch. I use the same Pimples with a leader when jigging bait too.

MMDon do you leave a hook on the swedish pimple or just use it as an attractor and weight to get the rig down quicker? I fish the same setup as you but I have been thinking about dropping the hook on the pimple to try and reduce tangles.
