Artificial intelligence
#1
I had an opportunity to overhear two guys in my restaurant having a debate over bait fisherman verses artificial and fly fisherman.
It made me laugh to hear both of their arguments, mostly because they got so worked up over a dumb subject!!!
It made me think about where I stand on the matter, and for the first time in my life I was guilty of being a fencesitter.(I fish with both bait, and flies and lures so I guess I'm like Switzerland on the issue).
I would like to hear everyone elses argument on the subject( mine is that it is all a blood sport even if you release everything just to go to joes crab shack and buy fish). Could be a fun post! What say you?

sounds pretty straight forward to me, here is my thought process on the subject.

1) Goal: to catch fish

2) Find out what the fish are biting.

3) Is it legal to use?
a) No: do not use.
b) Yes: use

4) Debate the subject? : No
5) Go fishing? Yes

But then again i been accused of having a simple mind.

I started out bait fishing now mainly fly fish but way I see it why limit your self. Last couple of seasons Ive started bass fishing with a spinning rod & fly rod. I get some pretty funny looks from both crowds but life is short have fun.

No big thing, personal choice, that is all.
Strictly flies here, but that is because I haven't needed anything else and I make my own[cool]

I kinda like the KISS approach that fishnutts outlined but I'll throw my two cents in on this discussion. I have no problem with people using whatever is legal on the particular waters that they are fishing. As long as you are keeping the rules, more power to ya. Go fishing.

It bugs me when people give others a hard time about using bait when it is legal to do so. I used earthworms to catch several members of the sunfish family when I was younger. My Dad decided we were going to be bass fishermen when I was a teenager and I didn't get to use anything but artificials for years. His point was, "I ain't gonna buy fish to catch fish." I can respect that. However, we kept a limit of fish when we went fishing. Why? Food.

I don't think keeping fish is as popular here as it is where I grew up. I'm sure a big argument against bait-fishing is deep-hooking of fish that you don't intend to keep. That isn't the case for me most of the time. I keep fish.

Bottom line: Go fishing and keep the rules. I won't give you a hard time about keeping/releasing fish. Just keep the rules.[:p][:p]

I've been a bait fisherman my whole life. For no real reason other than the fact that I have no fly fishing gear and haven't had the money to jump in feet first. I would love to get into it, but it just wasn't big where I grew up and didn't start thinking about it until recently.

It looks like a blast and I'm always up for a new challenge. Maybe someday...

When the ponds melt, give a shout. I have the gear.

My favorite way to fish is via fly, but a close second is on the ice with jigs and worms. Basically I'll fish using anything legal. I just like getting outside, leaving my worries and getting into the fish!

I like bait fishing(mainly ice) and fly fishing. I like both so much I've been known to mix the two. In the spring some of my left over meal worms have been known to find their way onto some of my flies with incredible results. I know, sacrilege, but it's not. Really. Give it a try sometime!

As far at the debate over which is better or more correct...well, I just don't have time for that. I was fly fishing before a river ran through it and things got all uptight.

Fish to your abilities, fish according to experience.
Fish the way that challenges you if you like challenge.
Fish the way that catches the fish you like to see or eat.
Fish the way that feels right
Most importantly fish the way that respects the fish and the waters.

I'm happy to see that folks are generally not so uptight about fishing methods. The one gentleman that was arguing for artificials only earlier today in the restaurant, was contending that fly fisherman, and he also mentioned bow hunters, were generally " a better class of sportsman, and the other side was a bunch of un-sophisticates and game hogs that kept everything they caught( as if keeping fish was a sin)!
As for me , I fish and hunt using all legal methods at my disposal, and for most any legal species that I can because I love just being out there! Nice to know that I'm not necessarily by myself on the subject. And for the record, elitist snobs are in
My opinion the most harmful group of people to our sport!

I'm with you, I bow hunt a lot but I also rifle hunt alot. I fly fish when the time is right or on certain rivers. I'll use live bait or cut bait, worms ect. I also like using rapalas or plastics or spinners. The Sad thing is that your always going to have those dudes that are pure as the driven snow because they only bow hunt or only fly fish. My oponion is they "and I don't mean all flyers and flingers so be calm" but the ones that run their mouths do so because they probably don't understand the joy of taking fish using these other methods or they suck at it. Just my two cents, hope this does'nt get locked I was carefull not to use the "E" word.

I got to say that goes both ways. Riflers looking down on Bow hunters, and believe it or not, Fly Fishers do catch allot of elitist flack from bait/spinners.

It works both ways. I have been on the receiving end on both these. Stereo Typing is the culprit, not the act.

Ask my wife... I regularly get worked up over dumb subjects! Sounds like the majority of my arguments. Smile

I say if it makes you happy and you catch fish, that's the way to go (as long as it doesn't involve dynamite).

To MichiganAngler,

Do you want to sell your Vex so you could get some FF gear? Just kidding. I've dabbled in fly fishing myself and enjoyed it also. I'm just too short to be swinging those 9' wands.

This sounds just like a dodge, ford , chevy discussion.
Ive done a little fly fishing, not real good at it...but i try...usually summer time im casting or trolling in the boat using lures, rappalas or panther martin holographic spinner....been know to throw a worm in....and I love catching bass. I know many bass fisherman wont even touch a trout (slimer).......what does it really matter? I could care less which method or species others prefer as long as they are within the limits of the law and common decency!!!!............just my $.02 worth.

I take a balanced approach. I ice fish in the winter, spearfish in the summer, and fly fish in the spring and fall. My goal is simple, catch fish. I catch them to eat, I catch them to release, and I catch them because it is fun.
