Upgrade
#1
Hi everyone,

I wanted to pick your brains about my next reel purchase. I have been mulling over upgrading my reel to either a Ross Airius 2, Orvis Access Mid Arbor III, Lamson Konic 2, or a Ross Flyrise 2. I will be putting the reel on my Sage VPS 586-2. Does anyone have any experience with any of these reels or companies in general? I am a little hesitant with the Ross Airius 2 because it is discontinued, but have heard that it is a great reel and have seen a number of reviews that are nothing but positive for anything Ross makes. Would there be issues with warranty if the reel is discontinued? Would it be better to go with the Flyrise, especially since it would be easier to find extra spools? I enjoy reading everyones posts here. Thank you for your knowledge!

I don't have any of the reels you are looking at, and I don't have an Allen reel either, but I have read good reviews from owners. Just as something more to look at:

Hi fishergomes. The Ross is a popular reel, but I am not familiar with the Asian made models, so sorry no answer there, but I have several of the Orvis Mids and Lamson. I like them.
May I ask what you are fishing for (species).

I mainly fish for Trout, with bass and carp thrown in along with the other warm water species. Lately I have been buying Allen reels:

The price is killer and the reel is great. Good drag, nice solid construction

But you have listed some great choices. The reel weights are close too. Just pick the one that gets most your attention.

I've been impressed with what I have seen of the Allen reels so far. But I kind of hesitated on saying anything as I don't actually own one. Nice to see you come up with the same thing! [cool]

I bought an Allen Alpha for my back up rod and have only fished it once, but from what I can tell so far it's a quality reel, it will get some better testing in a month or so when I really hit the water. Lamson's are great reels, I would go with a Guru over the Konic (depending on your budget) I like machined reels better than cast aluminum (just my .02) the Ross Flyrise is also cast aluminum. I fish mostly with my Okuma Helios and I really like that reel.

I bought the Okuma Helios (5/6) last fall and love it. I found a new one on Ebay for a good deal.

Hey, that Allen Fishing has a good price on fly boxes as well. http://www.allenflyfishing.com/pages/flyboxes

Yeah, Okuma makes some decent stuff, I fished an SLV (price was great) for a few years and really liked it, when the Helios came out I jumped on it and I love it also!!!

And on hooks. I have one of the boxes as well and they are sweet. The rods are great too. And all at killer prices. Justin is the best!

I really have enjoyed my konic it has been great and performs well in any condition as well I really enjoy that it is a fully sealed conical drag system it makes it really nice if you are fishing in some of those messy places.

Thank you for all of your responses. Great, just what I need, another reel (Allen) to be thrown into the mix Smile jk I checked out the reviews and prices and they look like a great reel as well. Flygoddess, I mostly fish for trout on either the middle or lower provo. I haven't broken out of my comfort zone and tried lake fishing with a fly rod. I usually use my spin gear for that but know that I need to try it out, especially Strawberry. I have fished the Berry a number of times but never with a fly rod. Just thinking of a slot cuttie on a fly rod makes my heart race. Do you know which Ross reels are not made in the US anymore? That's too bad that they outsource their manufacturing. Remo, noted about the machining vs. cast. That makes sense that the machining would be higher quality. I am upgrading from my okuma sierra 5/6. It is their low-end model so I am open to other okuma's since the sierra has served me well.

All the reels mentioned will get the job done just fine, I would really look at the Allen reel, I have the Alpha model and I think FG has that and the Trout version. They seem to be really nice reels and the price can't be beat.

Most reels are Asian made anymore. But, the Ross Worldwide or the less expensive are their Asian made models.
Even the Konic, Some parts that go into this reel are made in the U.S., and some are made overseas; final manufacturing and quality control is in Boise, Idaho.

As far as the cast, is die cast inferior to machined bar stock? There are really two issues here: strength and beauty. The question of strength is a complicated one, but let’s concede that a machined part is stronger, in general, than a die cast part. The better question is this: is a die cast part strong enough? Yes, if designed correctly. As evidence, just about every metal part in your car is die cast including your wheels. Are the highways littered with failed cast aluminum wheels?

For the record I am not bashing cast aluminum reels, I have had many and still have one (it has landed bonefish and tarpon). I just prefer machined and since you can get good machined aluminum reels and decent prices why not get machined. I did have an issue with a Ross Flyrise, I dropped it on my hardwood floor and it bent the rim of the body so it was rubbing on the spool, I was able to bend it back into shape so it worked but it kind of soured me on cast aluminum.

I have done the same thing. I have the Lamson Litespeed and that scares me. Allen reels are bulldogs though.

Those are cheap hooks. How would you rate them in comparison to Tiemco, Daiichi, etc?

I guess it depends on the hook #, but I really like them so far. I got the Scud hook that is very similar to the TMC 2488./

Cool, that was one of the hooks I was looking at as I tie most of my nymphs on scud hooks. Thanks for the info, I will give them a try the next time I need hooks.
