In the paper this Sunday, they were saying they are going to start lowering the weber basin reservoirs. What effect would this have on the ice? I'm assuming if the ice is solid to the banks that would create a air pocket between the water and Ice. Or am I wrong.

I am far from an expert, but usually the edges are the first to go unsafe and melt. I would imagine that the ice would sink slowly with the res and then the rest would crack and prove unsafe for fishing. I dont think that it would stay above the water and create a pocket.

[#800000]When the water level in a reservoir goes down, the ice will start resting on solid ground at its current thickness. The edges will start slanting with the angle of the underlying ground. Getting on and off the ice will not be a problem.[/#800000]

[#800000]When the water level goes up, the ice edge pulls away from the shoreline and thin, soft edges are the result. If it is bitter cold, the edges will freeze enough overnight such that in most cases they can be walked on in short order, sometimes overnight. If temps are not much below freezing, then the unsafe gaps at the edges are the result and planks may be required to reach the safer ice.[/#800000]

[#800000]The lowering at this time of year is normal to prepare for the runoff later this spring. [/#800000]

I've been up to Fontinelle in late Feb. when the lake has been drawn down 15' or so. On the steeper banks, there would be 3 foot thick slabs of ice laying on an angle on the bank down to the lake ice. Made for a very tricky exit and entry onto the lake!
