Pineview info and help needed...
#1
Wanting to go to pineview this weekend, traveling from Salt Lake area. Best route? I-15 to ogden, or highway 89 to Morgan and over Trappers loop?

Is the ice still thick/strong enough for snowmobiles?

Thanks in advance![Smile]

Take I-15 all the way to 12th Street in Ogden. Turn right take this all the way up through Ogden Canyon. Hang a left at the dam...go over dam follow road to the Port Ramp couple miles maybe. Turn right into the Port Ramp its accessible by vehicle...little bumpy in the main lot from the packed snow...launch sled from here. Ramp has snow on it and on the shorelines for the sled. Ice is plenty safe 8-9" but don't go way back in the bays as the rivers are running into PV and theres OPEN WATER...everywhere else no issues...Have fun and catch them fishies. [Smile][Smile]

Pulling a trailer there I would go up over Trappers Loop. That narrow winding canyon would scare the shiz out of me with a trailer.

Go over the loop and turn left, go down to the turn over the dam and turn right to go over the dam.

Good luck.

I'm a little ole lady and I pull my snowmobile trailer and also during the soft water my 18' Lund and 28' travel trailer up that canyon...nothing but a thing...been doing it for years...but hey thats from a little ole lady.

Going trappers loop is okay but pulling up that hill going down that hill and on and off various highways I'd think the straight shot on I-15 would be easier but thats why the gent wants comments...

From SLC I go up I-80 around to juntion with 84 at the turn to Evanston, WY then drop into Morgan and go over Trappers Loop then Turn right for cemetery point or left to go cross the dam for the port route. I like the route to Cemetary point better, that puts you in the middle of the lake easily without too much walking/hiking all over the lake and from what I have read this season most hole cutting has be done in the area between cemetary and browning point.

I have not tried this winter yet, but anohter option from I-80 is to use the East canyon road also, when i took that route in summer it took 30 to 40 minutes off my drive time pulling my 14 foot boat loaded with camp gear and I didnt have to deal with any messy situations on I-15 with all that behind me.

I 80 is an all around better drive also I think, more scenic as you pass places like Echo, Devils Slide, and the canyons look better covered in snow too.

my 2 cents the size of a Quarter.

Thanks to all for your input.[cool] Looking to fish cemetery point & browning point areas. How is parking and ice access from cemetery point?

Great parking and easy access at cemetery. . Really easy to get your snowmobile on the ice on the south side of cemetery, then just ride around the point towards Browning

Cemetery Point access is good but if the parking lot is plowed no snow you'll be riding the sled mostly over pavement if thats no big deal...okie dokie...however that area can get very crowded parking wise on the weekends so be prepared if you bring your sled to possibly get boxed in or find it interesting to park. Thats one reason I go to the Port Ramp room for vehicles with trailers/machines plus I don't like riding my sled on pavement. But thats me...[Smile][Smile] HAVE FUN!!!

Strikes: I am planning on going up Saturday myself.I'll be up there at 7:00 am. Leaving from south end of the SL Valley. Planning to fish the Cemetary Point. Maybe we can meet up. I'll have a black sled with white PVC rod holders on the back. Maybe we will see you.

By trappers loop are u referring to the Mountain Green road? If so I would use that route from SLC. What I do is go north on I 15 past Lagoon and then take that 1 89 north from there. When you get to the I 84 East bound take that to the mountain green exit. Turn left at that exit, then a quick right at the intersection and then go east till you see a Sinclair gas station. Turn left right there and go up over that road and bam you will right at pineview. That is by far the most direct and shortest route, I never go up 12th street, it just takes a long time to cross town, I don't have the patience. Going up i80 E past rockport and echo is a huge detour, you can go to pineview twice using the first method vs the i 80 method. LOL. I don't know miles wise, but it sure the hell feels like forever. Did it once for the hell of it, not ever gonna do it anytime soon if ever lol. I use too much gas as it is LOL. No need for a scenic detour haha. Seen it all summer and winter. LOL.

I agree that is the best way from SLC. But another question. I want to fish at the point and it has been some time I must admit. Where has been the most succeess recently? I have read go as far as you can in the parking lot and go straight north into 28 feet of water and I heard north of the boat ramp. Any suggestions?

Pineview ice as of today was solid 9-10"...shorelines are solid...NO SLUSH anywhere...very easy walking...Very hard crust on top so no snow to cool the track...we didn't go faster than 15 MPH...each time we stopped kicked the hard crust snow on the tracks...so just be mindful if taking a sled and if you don't have ice scratchers installed...don't want the track to overheat...[Smile][Smile]

Good luck to you all, my trip got postponed til Monday AM. I think I will leave the snowmobile home and just hoof it. Sounds like it shouldn't by that bad walking. Thanks for the tips on the sled track, I did not know that.[crazy] Post all your stories with lots of info, I'm going to need it. 1st time fishing through the ice at the "view". I'm planning on starting at Cemetery point and moving toward Browning point. Like some else said...we will see how far I get by my onesy[Wink].

Whatever you do DONT make an afternoon trip to pine. I made that mistake yesterday. Perch fishing is still not back to the good ole days or even close. I must have popped holes east from cemetary point yesterday for at least a mile to east. One freakin lousy perch in two hours of covering water. They are for sure not everywhere like in years past. Looks to be a morning or early afternoon bite, I got there at like 4 ish and fished till dark which was maybe 6 30 ish. Mantua today, I know I can hook bluegills there to work out the frustration, and then if I decide to go another 20 minutes and break my ass up the hill hyrum is a 100 percent chance of catching trout.

Recommendation...take the sled if you don't use it so be it...if you do take it just drive under 20MPH and you'll be fine...when you stop just kick snow up onto the tracks or take a shovel and scoop the crusty snow toss onto the track.

The problem is sled tracks are cooled by having snow on them (we're going to have scratchers installed for next season)...when there's no snow and one drives at top speed like a bat-outta-hell [crazy] for a 'long time' is when potential issues can happen with overheating the track components. We're old so we drive slow anyways and enjoy the scenery...[Smile][Smile]
