PAGOSA SPRINGS, Colo. -- Some of the best spring turkey hunting in Colorado can be found in the ponderosa pine forests near Pagosa Springs. Learn to hunt wild turkeys at a free seminar, 4-6 p.m., April 15, in the extension building at the Archuleta County Fairgrounds.
Experts from the Colorado Division of Wildlife will be on hand to explain all aspects of turkey hunting, including: where and when to go; types of calls; hunting strategies; types of firearms and ammo needed; how to dress; and rules, regulations and ethics.
"Wild turkeys are a challenge to hunt and they provide an excellent and nutritious meal," said Adrian Archuleta, a district wildlife manager in the Pagosa Springs area.
Turkey hunting is also a great way for novices to get started hunting. The season is six weeks long; and hunting the birds, while challenging, is not as difficult as learning the aspects of hunting big game.
The 2011 spring turkey season starts on April 9 and continues through May 22.
For more information, call the division office in Durango at (970)375-6744.
