There was a report on the news tonight about a land slide near Calamity Ranger station that closed the road across the dam . During the report they showed some footage of the lake and it is ice free and there were boats out on it . Thought some of you might like to know . Curt G.

A portion of the road actually settled about 8 feet. It has been a problem area for a few years, but with the water level dropping, the road gave way.

just to let you guys know, that I was up there Thursday morning to look arund and it is still froze over[frown] the clip you seen on Calamity was last summer or the summer before. keep you updated.

I will be going by on Sunday and will update that evening if someone hasn't already. I will check out Blowout and see how it looks also. If time I will drive across at Calamity also.
I do know a couple weeks ago the ice was off at the upper end of the lake and looking very rotten around Indian Creek. That is as far as I went. I would have guessed it to be off there by now. I will also try and remember to drive to the lake at Indian Creek and see if you can launch a boat from there. Not sure if they are letting more water out than is coming in now. The Snake above the lake is really pushing some water down it for sure from Jackson Lake making room.

We rode indian creek on our snowmobiles last weekend and there is still lots of ice on the lake. Upper end there is open water and there was a small spot of open in the bay at big elk creek.

It will be around 2 more weeks if we dont get some warm weather !! The road across the dam is closed. There are some open spots but for the most part there is still a lot of ice. My buddy drives by it everyday so I will keep you guys informed.

As of 4-29-11 according to the bureau of reclamation there is about 8,800 cfs coming into palies & they are letting out 18,000 cfs. Palies is down to 17% of capacity and is dropping about 1 % a day.

They must really be afraid of having lots of water coming out of the mountains to be sending that much water downstream. Does anyone know what percentage of snow has melted above palies? I know that Jackson feeds it as well. I know the SF is somewhat fishable, but I'll focus my efforts on more fishable waters for now.

There has been very little snow melt so far year. The crews plowing the south entrance of Yellowstone have encountered 14 feet of snow on the road near Lewis canyon. Here in Jackson you can still ski Snow King from the top all the way to the parking lot !! The total snowfall at Raymer plot was over 670" for the season. There is still a 158" base at 9000 feet. They could empty Palies and fill it twice with all the snow that is still up high. When the runoff starts, if it ever does, Expect very high, very dirty rivers, lots of debris floatng around Palies. This is going to be a very ugly year, especialy on the South Fork.

Last I heard snowpack around Snake, Salt, and Greys river drainages were around 140 percent, maybe take away 10-20 percent here and there. Going up every day it doesn't melt. Next couple of months are going to be interesting on how it all goes away.

Snow King and Teton Village from top to bottom looks as if it is the FIRST of March of a banner snow year and not May. Every run completely covered everywhere. It is pretty amazing how much snow there is and is left.

I drove by it today, still frozen up a decent ways past the big elk creek area, but it's going pretty quickly. I say two weeks of decent warm weather and it's clear as can be.

140% is on the low side too, we have so much snow up high its not even funny, checked spots at 9k feet with a 10 ft probe last weekend and never once touched ground.......... once it turns off and gets warm we are going to be serious crunch of what to do with all the water.

I just checked "Snowtel" and it showed the basin average above Palies as 159% of normal in terms of water equivalent. They are doing the right thing from a flood control viewpoint but I wonder how low they will take Palies and what effect it might have on the fishing. I also noticed about 180 percent of normal above Bear Lake. It looks like a "perfect storm" for flooding setting up -- especially in the areas that lack reservoirs or other flood control mechanisms. Watch out if we get a hot spell with wind.....

Meanwhile, I will figure out where to go fishing now that I have ruled out Palies....

Was up there yesterday (4/30) and with a little work you could put in and get around all the ice with whatever boat you want through one big open channel that heads toward the south end on the lake........only question is how do you even get a boat to the water? It's so low that I doubt that anyone would be getting in the water unless it is with a canoe! Hopefully they shut the south fork down soon so that there is a chance of doing some spring fishing out on a boat in palies.

Jackson Lake is at 64% and Palies is at 15%. I think they are preparing for a flood! As they should. If we get a sudden increase in warming, a little wind, and some good spring rain, there will probably be enough water to fill them twice again or more in a very short time. It has been such a long time since we have had this much excess water in the system!!

Does anyone know if they are dropping the levels at Alexander and Oneida also??

You are correct on the 8% and at the rate they are dumping water that should be by the end of the week. If you look at the reclamations website it shows about 7-8k feet a sec are being dumped in so that is what the SF should drop to if it doesn't warm up this week. If it warms up........ who knows. We rode Indian creek again yesterday and there was another foot of new dense snow up there. Water doesn't seem to be an issue for this year. Place Im worried about flooding bad is everything in the flood plain below the teton, Its got now flood control on it anywhere.
