Unlikely fishing holes?
#1
After reading some posts today, I thought it'd be fun to hear about unusual places you've fished that produced fish and/or unusual places that you haven't fished but wondered if it had fish in it. Examples could be canals, little obscure ponds, streams, etc. Not to mention you hear about back country ponds and streams that produce pretty good, how do people find these? I'll start the thread:

One spot I remember fishing as a kid was a little pond down off the old highway in springville. There was a little pond down off the west side of the road (apparently there used to be a steel mill right by this pond), and we would catch trout out of it. I'm not sure if other people even fished it. And i'm not even sure if that pond exists anymore. It's basically between where Brand-X used to be and Provo.

One stream I've always wondered about is near the Spanish Fork jail, it's a small stream that seems to be quite slow, it appears to have some depth to it. I've always been tempted to fish it, but I didn't want to get embarrased if there weren't fish in it and everyone knew it but me[blush]

Only those people who were willing to trespass. It always had plenty of signs around it and on the building by it.

Never fished it. Looked at it the other day hoping to see some minnows or something. Nada.

Well I'm not going to say that there weren't trespassing signs, but I was just a kid when I fished it if that's any consolation. But thanks for calling me out so freely.

Anybody ever known me to beat around the bush? It always had no trespassing signs. How would I know? I knew the family that lived just south of there. I grew up in Springville. I drove by it thousands of times. My neighbor owned Strong Construction Co. that was on the east side of the highway there. My mother worked in the office at the Fina gas station that was there.

Give the guy a break! I'm sure you have never been anywhere you weren't supposed to when you were a kid[angelic]

I have fished that pond many times and knew there were signs there, but talked to the Utah County Sherrifs about it and they said as long as there was no drinking, smoking marijauna, or tagging going on that it wasn't a big deal. I had many sherrifs visit me while fishing there and they were all pretty relaxed about it and just didn't want to see any partying going on down there.

[cool]On a lighter note... there used to be some monster largemouth bass in there and lots of bluegill. Also used to be some big trout and of course carp. Unfortunately that pond is long gone. They drained it in preparation for industrial development[frown] Sad to see!

In taylorsville, by the little radio stations (one was the OLD arrow 103.5 building, then a kids station. I have no clue what it is now), right off the Jordan river, there was a small pond that I think was built by the landowner for his horses. There were large boulders around parts of it. There were big carp in there that were really spooky.
I didn't live around there bit knew people who did. We would drop little bead head nymphs between the rocks and catch bluegills. Biggest one was maybe four inches. This also the first and only place I have seen a fathead minnow!

I hate to see ponds like that disappear. As a kid I used to fish a small pond on a family farm (yes it was my family) and it had small gills in it. It was drained about 15-20 years ago to make way for houses. Still miss that farm pond.

I once fished in a small pond just north of the prison on a lunch break. Don't know if I was trespassing or not, but it is right off the frontage road, and in view of one of the prison facilities. I had seen carp rising in there driving by and decided to go for it. Caught one huge carp about 20" and the prisoners in the facility started cheering when I lifted it up, pretty funny.
I also fished a canal in Bountiful right behind the library when I was younger. It is very shallow and clear, but there are sometimes a few small trout in there. FYI we were actually wading the stream which I am sure is illegal, but kids do stupid things...........and I still do them[:p]

We used to fish in a canal in South Jordan- mostley just carp in it. I still take my dogs in there to play but haven't fished it in years. (No trespassing signs all over too... and I let my dogs run with no leash)

Ouch. You cut me to the quick. How will I ever recover? [angelic]

Yep, HB141 doesn't mean a thing. Just jump in and trespass to your heart's delight.

Ha, this post should be renamed "Confessions: Past and Present. CAUTION- Chastising May Occur."

(@ jiggety) I'm sure those prisoners relished watching someone do what they couldn't right on the other side of the fence. I would have cheered you on too!

Well, I can honestly say, I have never fished where I was not legally allowed and that is quite a few years,
but, as to the subject, there was a little branch off the Snake river that ran down by my Grandmothers house...great catfish and trout. Then the main branch of the Snake right behind the other Grandparents house (when I grew up) was trout, cat and sturgeon.
What a great fishing spot!

When my brother and I were kids we would bike over to a local stream and then hike back into the woods to a beaverpond to fish. I loved that beaverpond -- I caught the largest trout I ever caught in Western Washington there -- a 21 & 1/2 inch cutthroat. (most trout in Western Wa are small -- like 6 inchs!) Now the area is a housing development.

Anyway, on our way there we would pass this swampy area along one of the ditches. It was kind of a small pond, but every year it mostly dried up as the summer progressed. Once as it was just in the process of drying up, my brother saw a movement in the mud. We stopped, and not having any aversion to mud, we investigated. After poking deep in the mud what we thought was probably a frog turned out to be a 15 inch catfish!!! It had dug itself down about a foot in the mud, but it was still plenty lively. Amazing!!!

To this day I can't figure out where he came from, or how long it lived in that swamp. That ditch wasn't really connected to any waterway, and catfish weren't in our trout stream that drained the area. You just never know where fish will survive or how they get where they do!

When you talk about unusual, I think of a guy I know from Springville. He'd fish Strawberry with his dad & always nailed some nice ones. They'd come home over the road that drops into Hobble Creek and he would have his dad drop him off on the low section of the creek by the road with a rod & a couple of those big Strawberry fish on a stringer tied to his waist. What a hoot! Cars would slam on the brakes and asked where he'd caught them. He'd point the the creek and say right there. Oh for the good ol' days.
