Huntington Creek
#1
Any info on if Huntington Creek the main fork that comes out of Electric lake is fishable? Its just too long a drive to go down and discover they opened the dam. Or if any one knows where you can get the stream flow for this. It does not show on the page I use for all the other places in Utah that I frequent.

Also hows the snow in the Canyon. I went up there in May and the water would have been fishable if I had snow shoes.

Thanks.

I was down there a week ago. Flows were very high and it was off color. I have never seen it that high. The Left Hand Fork was really high and I had hopes that once I got above it the creek would be fishable. No such luck. Electric Lake is pretty full and they appear to be dumping to accommodate the snow melt. None of the creek appeared fishable. It may be awhile. There was no snow along the creek but there is plenty up on top. I think it will be some time late in the month or perhaps early July before they drop the releases from Electric Lake and before the Left Hand Fork begins to drop.

Thanks very much. So I think I will wait a few weeks. The good news I hope is that those flows should clean out some of the 2-3 feet of silt on the bottom of the slower sections so they might become wadeable again.

I concur on the silt cleanout, plus a few beaver dams. There was a report on the General Utah Forum tonight indicating that Electric Lake is spilling, which means more water than what I saw a week ago.

I fished Huntington creek last weekend, so I thought I would offer an update. The river is clear and very fishable from electric lake to at least the forks. Below the forks it looked to be running a bit high. I could tell that very recently the water was 1-2 feet higher than it is now. I haven't fished here in a few years, but it looked like several beaver dams were washed out with the recent high water.

The fishing was great. When we first arrived to our camp spot it was already getting late, but I couldn't resist a quick trip to the river. I arrived at the river in fading light to see fish rising all over the place. I quickly tied on a small PMD dry and was rewarded with a nice little brown right away. Then it was getting difficult to see my little dry, but they were still rising, so I decided to see if they were into terrestrials. I tied on a huge beetle that I could actually see. I found a taker on my second cast!

The next day I fished a San Juan worm below my beetle (makes a great indicator). I caught about a dozen or so fish on the San Juan with no more takers on the beetle. I later tried a rainbow warrior and also had good luck. I caught one brown that was about 14-15", which in my experience is pretty good for that creek.

I hadn't fly fished in about a year (mostly I've been drowning worms with my 3 year old daughter), and hadn't been to Huntington creek in about two years. That is where I learned to fly fish, so I was really nice to get back to my old stomping grounds. It was even better to find out that I still know how to catch a fish or two.

[cool]Thanks for the great report, just what I was hoping for. We are scheduled to go down this weekend and the debate was regarding going down on Thursday or waiting until Friday. Thursday sounds like the plan. Now if the monsoon weather will cooperate. If there are going to be thunderstorms anywhere in the state of Utah they will center over that canyon.
