Willard Report 9/10/11 + questions??

When we got to the north marina at willard around 6 the weather wasn't looking good and we even debated not launching. We went to the south marina and talked to a couple of people who said it was boiling so we went in. after a couple hours on the south end boil hunting and seeing some close calls( almost a boil but boats getting to close with loud engines scared them off.) we went across the lake more to the west end to troll. after a about a half an hour my bro-in-law caught a nice wiper probably around 6 pounds. then in the next hour he caught a nice walleye and a smaller wiper. we were tired so we called it a day.

I have realized this is my 7th trip in a row with my bro-in-law to willard where I get a personal skunk and he catches a couple. I haven't fought a wiper and really want to. we have tried everything we can think of to get me one but with no avail. I am headed back up monday or tuesday and was hoping for any type of advice. any small tricks that I could be doing wrong or something??

Any help would be great.

If you brother-in-law always catches a few I suggest you fish the same way he does.

ya we have tried that. I always spend a portion of my time with the same gettup as him. should I just write this off as really bad luck?? whenever we have the same stuff it is just him that catches it.

What type of line is he using and what type are you. Is he using a slip or swivel or how does he tie on. And does his lure run more true? The devil is in the details.

Just a suggestion....[]get a picture of a bigger fish in your avatar...that thing is bad luck I think!! Just me.....

and just kidding...try trolling jigs...white or smoke...just fast enuff they kinda "skip" across the water...killed 'em one day doing that ... I was doing about 2-2.5 mph and they LOVED that tactic...dunnno tho' those fish are just WEIRD!!!

[font "Calibri"]My two cent would be to always run a good quality snap lock on your cranks; it helps the action of your lure more than anything else, plus it makes for quicker bait change. Second, troll with a line counter reel. At Willard where the water is so shallow and so murky you need to have proper bait placement to have consistent action. When you buy your Rapalas it will give you a general running depth. That is based on boat speed, line diameter, and line out off your reel. The line counter lets me know right were my bait is running at all times.[/font]

[font "Calibri"]Just last Friday the fish was holding right at 6-9 feet. That being said I was able to run my crank at to 85’ then tie into my planer board and it was 7 fish on. Yet my second pole running the same bait at 65’ feet and then again out to 100’ only picked up one fish. Sometimes it all about the little details.[/font]

hey thanks for the advice. I finally hooked into my first wipers. on monday We succussfully hit a boil and landed 5 wipers in probably 15 min. most of the time was spent trying to ready our poles for the next cast.

Wipers have an another fan. those lunkers are fun to reel in.

ps. haha ya I need to change that. I will put my first wipers picture up there. my current avatar picture was on east canyon and it was a stinking 15 hour day of fishing. with only that fish as a reward.
