Does anybody know a good way to hunt chukar in the parowan gap or lund area? I've never hunted chukar before so I wouldn't know what I was doing if I went after them.

The best way I hunt for them anywhere is to get up on a high ridge. Then, listen for them.

couple things you need to know about chukars. first of all go get you a chukar call. head out in the morning or evening and chuk for them and wait for some returned calls. it is real hard to hunt them if you plan on just walking around the mountains for them. once you locate them you absolutely have to get above the mountain that they are on. once you are at the top then you can hunt them. Chukars always except once in a while, will run up hill and fly down hill. if you find them on flat ground, and thats not very often, then they are real hard to hunt and you pretty much need a dog to hold them. as you have already probably seen they live in real rough country so be prepared to hike big mountains. they like to live under rock encropments and if you can find water your in a good spot usually. once you get above them remember where they were and walk down quickly to flush them. dont pause or try to sneak they will be gone. once you flush them shoot away and follow where they land and hunt the next till you get your limit. chukars usually hang out in large groups so you can hunt a whole group till you limit. remember to stay out of sight and walk all the way around the group once you find them to get above them. need any other help just pm me.

There isn't a wild flock in the gap. Most of the chukur are pen raised birds that the state releases once in a while. Good luck

i read they had a good batch turnout the last few years down in central utah. because of drought conditions they had a good hatch. just what i read. where are you talking about when you say the gap?

That's the area that Mtnman asked about. It's north of Cedar but most people go out to Parawan gap to see the indian petroglyph's. It's a cool area and has some other historical sites that I can't talk about because the state doesn't know about them.

The DWR is always releasing chukar so hunters can have a so called hunt but most of the time the birds are to stupid to really be called wild. If they would release them after the season, you might get healthy populations. Over all chukar habitat isn't known for being in utah. If your looking for good chukar hunting look above the snake river and columbia. Those ridges and cheat grass are perfect habitat and hold plenty birds. The only problem is most people are to lazy now days to walk the hills so the birds go in cycles from predation and disease.

here is one trick that I learned. if there is no wind or just a little get a balloon and about 30 feet to 50 feet on line tie it to your back.(try and get a white,brown,or black balloon)this helps hold the birds on the ground because they think it's a hawk. lots of time when you do this you can go uphill on them with out them runing on you. It works I do it almost all the time now give it a try.
