Provo 9/11
#1
OK, first of all: long-time reader, first-time poster. I go to this site when I'm planning my weekend excursions. I figure it's only fair to share a report when I go somewhere no one's written about in a while. So here's to sharing Smile

I am posting on behalf my fishing buddy Kota too, because she is a dog and cannot type.

We went up to "Lunker Lane" on Sunday, just under Jordanelle. I think this is techinally the Middle Provo. Got there about 11 and probably missed out on some awesome morning action. But I do love catching those breif windows in the afternoon when the fish decide it's on.

Fished just out of the parking lot with a scud/san juan combo until I noticed some rises. Switched to a tan elk hair caddis and got 2 strike in 10 minutes. Second one I hooked into pretty good and it was a nice size, 12" or so, but got off when I went to pull him up on the bank.

Walked down stream for maybe a half mile fishing all the little pockets I could find. The hoppers were out in force but I got nothing using them. So when I found a good deep hole I threw on a tiny blue WD40 with a split-shot (I think...some it was little midge-ish thing) and about 4 casts in, got a giant monster. Or so I thought. The thing was taking line and when I finally wrestled it out of the current it still felt super heavy... but weird. Come to find out it was a really pretty 15 incher that I had somehow managed to hook in the belly.

Kept walking the river and pulled a nice 10" out of another hole on the same WD40. Then I promptly lost the WD40. Who knows how. Kota doesn't.

We came to a little lull-y spot and I tried a few other flies, thinking about calling it a day, and all of a sudden the fish start rising everywhere around me. I put the caddis that has done so well for me lately back on. My casts were placed perfectly but the buggers were just not hitting. I wasted a good 5 min of prime time before it finally occured to me to switch to a PMD. And of course, got a strike on the first cast. I got two small 5/6-inch-ish ones before the rises stopped.

It was 4:00 by then I we hadn't eaten all day, so we went to The Other End in Heber for a burger and a beer.

So 4.5 fish in 5 hours (almost an average of a fish an hour...) and lots of good hits. I can think of much worse ways to spend a Sunday.

Nice report. I usually finish out my trips up there at the Other End as well. I generally get the wings and beer though.

Welcome aboard! Kim-n-Kota!
Nice post. I took Kydo (yellow lab) to South fork today,he retrieved a nice brown for my mom who is up there camping, carried it 200yrds to drop it at her feet. I think he is getting ready for the duck hunt. Usually he just scares the fish away from me or breaks them off when I catch them.

Nice work, thanks for the detailed report! Love your profile pic too. I hardly ever fish the Middle Provo anymore. I think it has been since 2002 since I last gave it a try. Your post gives me hope to try it again sometime soon. Keep them coming!

Fished the MP last night and threw on a streamer just after dark and pulled out this pig. (picture sucks I had to use the flash on my phone it was dark. During the day the PMD's both on top and bottom were the ticket, but hucking the meat brought out the big boys.
