A Fun Story
#1
I went out Saturday morning to hunt turkey. I wasn't expecting to run into turkeys, as I was really scouting for deer - but I had my shotgun with me just in case. It was a beautiful morning at dawn - 60 degrees - sleeves rolled up - no wind - etc. - I was just outside, and Jesus was just loving me that day.

Then I heard the distinctive moose call. Pulled out the binocs, and several hundred yards away was the bull and cow. They were calling like crazy. After awhile, I heard another call from up the hill beside them - but it didn't sound quite the same as their call.

This went on for some time. Then about 12 turkeys came out from the direction of the two moose, and started heading straight towards me. Bingo - I thought - I'lI let them come, as I sat and waited on this peaceful morning.

The mooses kept on calling and milling around. Then I saw a big black body at the top of the hill above the two moose down below. I raise the binocs, and I see a couple of cows - moo cows - bovines. I'm almost laughing out loud as the moose are corresponding with the cows, and the turkeys are coming toward me.

The turkeys end up coming to within a couple hundred yards of me, and I start thinking about how to best position myself for a kill. It's Fall season - I'll take a hen or a jake - preferably a hen - but I don't care - I just want the meat. All of a sudden, directly between them and me, I hear another moose call. And then he stands up, a big ol' bull.

The turkeys do a u-turn, and are gone down into the canyon.

Whatever. This whole show took about an hour to unfold - the cows talking with the moose, the turkeys getting into the mix, and the big bull moose standing up right in front of me...

A PERFECT SATURDAY! I'd trade my turkey tag for a show like that anyday!

Oh, and I discovered the deer trail that leads to the wild apple trees [Wink]

My camera battery was too dead to zoom. The bull looks further away than he is. Zoom in, and you can see he's a bull. Nothing like the big ones I've seen in SE Idaho, but probably the biggest I've seen up here in N. Idaho. Anyway - an exciting a.m.
