■ LAKE MEAD -- Anglers are still finding shad throughout the lake. Threadfin shad can be used as live bait, but until a regulation change is made, gizzard shad must be dead before storing them or using them as bait. Early-morning action is fair to good in the Vegas Wash arm. Striped bass are providing a mix of top-water and submerged-bait fishing. Elsewhere, one angler reeled in a 20-pound striper out of Temple Bar, and a 10-pound catfish was caught in the same area. Smallmouth and largemouth bass haven't been jumping into live wells, but anglers are catching a few on swimbaits and lures.

Notice the Gizzard shad part.
NDOW was at our last weigh-in and said there was nothing in writing as of yet or for next year as well.

I checked the fishing regs and it does list species approved or use as live bait (page #12) No mention of the Gizzard Shad as approved, the Threadfin Shad is on the approved list.

Page #11
In Lake Mead, Lake Mohave and the Colorado River located in Clark County, ONLY golden shiner, flathead minnow, mosquitofish, red shiner, threadfin shad, carp and goldfish may be used as live baitfish.

One other thing on top of page #12 states something rather important.

The use of baitfish, wether dead or alive or the parts thereof, other than preserved salmon eggs is prohibited in all water except those listed below.

So can you use the Gizzard Shad as bait or not?

Still have not found anything on the use of dead Gizzard Shad.

Here are pages 10 & 11 of the regs.

Well according to the part you typed In bold it is okay as long as it's dead.... Looks like something that yet is to determined really reading the regs.... Hmmm I would just stick with lures they pull the big boys any ways... I just picked up a arsenal of plugs from Allan gonna give them hell on the river tomorrow...

Isn't Mead listed below? That would mean that it is ok to use.

That's dumb. They are going to have to come up with a better regulation on that now that we have a proper breeding population.

You cant treat gizzards like they are temporary. Those guys are here to stay.

In reading the regs, Gizzard Shad are not on the approved list for live bait, meaning Gizzard Shad can be used for bait if dead. Since Gizzard Shad are not considered "game fish" which is prohibited dead or alive as bait, then I would have to conclude Gizzard Shad are OK for bait as long as they are dead.

The part about using fish for "use of fish as bait, whether dead or alive, or parts thereof, other than preserved salmon eggs, is prohibited" does not apply to Lake Mead, Lake Mojave or the Colorado River System in Southern Nevada.
