■ LAKE MEAD -- Anglers are still finding shad throughout the lake. Threadfin shad can be used as live bait, but until a regulation change is made, gizzard shad must be dead before storing them or using them as bait. Early-morning action is fair to good in the Vegas Wash arm. Striped bass are providing a mix of top-water and submerged-bait fishing. Elsewhere, one angler reeled in a 20-pound striper out of Temple Bar, and a 10-pound catfish was caught in the same area. Smallmouth and largemouth bass haven't been jumping into live wells, but anglers are catching a few on swimbaits and lures.
Notice the Gizzard shad part.
NDOW was at our last weigh-in and said there was nothing in writing as of yet or for next year as well.
I checked the fishing regs and it does list species approved or use as live bait (page #12) No mention of the Gizzard Shad as approved, the Threadfin Shad is on the approved list.
Page #11
In Lake Mead, Lake Mohave and the Colorado River located in Clark County, ONLY golden shiner, flathead minnow, mosquitofish, red shiner, threadfin shad, carp and goldfish may be used as live baitfish.
One other thing on top of page #12 states something rather important.
The use of baitfish, wether dead or alive or the parts thereof, other than preserved salmon eggs is prohibited in all water except those listed below.
So can you use the Gizzard Shad as bait or not?
