Muskie dilema solved!

Went out to the narrows again yesterday. This time I used a 5" wire leader ahead of my 3" Senko. Only caught 20 smallies and all were small. I'm blaming that on the wire leader.

Had another Muskie encounter and this time didn't cut me off. I cast my senko near a submerged rock twitched and got a strike but I couldn't move the fish. I could feel him shaking his head but I thought it was hung up on the rock. So I kept yanking away and finally the bait came loose and shot up out of the water. Cast to the same spot and this time he took the bait and swam out from under the rock. HUGE Muskie with a white senko dangleing from his mouth []. He swam out to deeper water and spit the hook. At least I didn't loose my hardware but I only got half my worm back.

Seems I can't win no matter what []. With the wire leader they bite short without they bite me off. It seems like the Muskie are getting active and are prowling the shorelines. I'm having an encounter every trip now and I keep my bait within 10' of the shoreline.

Been hearing mention of cemetary point, where is that?

Sounds like tons of fun but frustrating too. Usually when I am loosing fish of any kind it's due to dull or rounded hook points. Make sure your hooks are well sharpened so they stick into your thumbnail with very little pressure. I've never caught a musky but I've heard they have hard mouths and grip tight to lures and one needs to set the hook hard 2-3 times. Perhaps one of the musky catchers can talk about this more. Hope you get the next one to hand.

Just east of the narrows. Enter through Huntsville and go all the way to the end to the cemetary walla Cemetary Point. I've never fished out there always get hung up on fishing the bays just to the north of it. Its like a magnet or a bug to a light I see the water there then I'm in it, and don't stray from it, don't know why thats just what happens.

It is fun as well as frustrating! Especially after you see a muskie and feel his weight those hard fighting smallies just don't seem to get the old adreneline flowing anymore.

I did notice that my hook point was dull after I changed the worm and missed a few fish.

A lot of folks fish ice fish there during the winter and I've always seen people heading over there everytime I've fished @ Pineview. if you head out there you won't want to pay to park at the swim beach/boat launch just before you get there, there is a free parking place just off to the right then walk out to the end on the right hand side you'll see a trail that heads around the cemetary just follow it out til you get to the end. I think there are some drop offs along the way to find some deeper water.Good luck!

I have hooked sevral muskies off the point. havn't tried for smallies but the bank is steep and rocky should be smallies there

hi al odds are looking good for you sounds like any day now we will be hearing about the one that didn't get away BUT you know what they say a picture is worth a thousand words when you head up that way let me know and i'll come along and take that picture for you !!! ( like i said in another post allready scheaming for # 3 ) you might want to keep this in mind though if you are catching bass and getting bit by musky every time in the area where you are fishing why not fish where you know they are ?

dont feel too bad hustler. you have had more bites than i have in fishing that lake in three years from shore. so i would say your doing a pretty good job.

hey hustler there really isnt a point there anymore. as in rocks and stuff water is too low and is a long walk over to it and youll be in the sand. as far as muskies being on it, it might be great for that but the conditions are certainly not the same as earlier with cover and stuff.

Thanks for the info Xman, I'll stick to the narrows. I've been fishing the narrows so much thought I'd try a change of scenery but if the fish aren't coperative anywhere else the current scenery will suffice[]

Hustler you might try 27lb fluorocarbon tippet for a leader,you will get the clear line for smallies and the aberration resistance for the tigers.
