Ice Fishing Red Pine Lake 12-16

A whole new level of insanity! - My twin and a friend joined me for a BRUTAL day ice fishing Little Cottonwood Canyon. We hit the White Pine Trailhead at 10am. We slowly made our way across and up the 3.5 mile one way hike in the snow. We got to the untracked Red Pine Lake at 2pm. Drilled the 1st hole in the middle of the lake and busted out the tape measure. It was a Whoping 16 inches thick! [shocked]

Within 10 mins my twin lost his 1st fish. We knew what was working at that point. I copied the lure and tactics and BAM fish on! I ended up with 5 beautiful cutts. My twin got 2 cutts and my buddy got his 1st ever fish thru the ice. My twin left 1 hour early (4pm) to get a head start as he was on snowshoes while my buddy and I were planing on skiing down. By 5pm I had lost a few fish. In total I lost 5 fish and my twin lost 4 and we all had plenty of bites to keep us happy.

We were using Pumpin Pepper Gold jigs in 1/32oz with nightcrawlers. We also got a few bites with a Sonic in Gold. Tapping the bottom was key.

My buddy and I had a hell of a time sking out. LOTS OF ROCKS and no real room to stop. We were at the car by 6pm. Yes I skied out with a headlamp and the auger sticking out of my pack got caught up on every tree that I passed. For all those thinking about it.... get there soon! The avalanche danger will be really bad come the next storm.

PS I think the catch rates were down cuz of the "ice tent city" factor.[]

That is one heck of an adventure!!!!!!!!!!!! Wish I were that crazy er a wish I were that young again. I have been to red pine in the summer but only made it half way on snow shoes. Good go'n man. More power to ya!!!

I got a ton of strange looks by fellow hikers/skiers. Also some snowshoers arrived at the lake and started lauhig at us! That is until I got a fish for them to see.

I had to get out and combine backcountry skiing and fishing. Plus I wanted a rematch after the moose scared me off a few months ago.

That is halarious! BTW we tried your FireTiger Hali style jigs with no bites so you can cross those off the list of what works in Red Pine.

Pretty sure we will be one of the only ice fisherman there this year. As for the summer that might be different. We will be hitting it for sure!

At the trailhead you told me that going up there to ice fish would be an adventure....and you were right. Hard to believe I have been hiking that area for years (summer and winter) and have never brought the fishing pole along. There was a lot of effort involved for that experience....well worth it if you ask me!

[cool][#0000ff]Sheesh! Somebody gotta talk to ya about lure selection. Maybe you just left the fire tiger "holy jig" tied on after Mantua. Those is perch jigs. The silly hatchery pet rainbows in Mantua might eat them because they don't know no better. But those sophisticated high mountain trout are more discriminating. When do you suppose one of those cutties last saw a hatch of fire tiger caddis...or mayflies? Probably scared the spots offa them.[/#0000ff]

Ah just wanted to see if it worked that is all. I have a experiment complex. If I had more time I would have lowered more lures down to them.

My knee is good to ski but the snow is iffy. Rocks and stumps have the capability of puting me back on the sugeons table in a heart beat. ETDT has been approved to ski but has yet to actually ski. He commented on the way up on how he wished he brought the skis but afterwards he realized the "rocky bob-sled course" (the trail) was a horrible reintroduction to skiing.

We were both SORE as hell as we have been out of the game for a while. And to think I used to get 5 laps once I was up there in previous years with no soreness. We limped and had slightly swollen knees all Saturday and had to cancel our plans of either Twin Lakes or Smith and Morehouse for today. We opted for Scofeild instead. Report coming soon.

As for challenging avalache warnings I semi do. Why is it that every friday the danger level goes up and every monday the danger level goes down? Hmmm, conditions didn't change! There is way more to comprehend in fishing than Backcounty skiing but the life and death consequences of decisions are far more severe in the backcountry.

What size auger did you guys end up packing in?

Very scenic - nice shots. Don't know that I've gotten the skinny skis out since I started ice-fishing. But ya managed to do both in one. Well played.
Early snow on rocky trails, don't love that. When you don't even have enough room to turn or stop, and snowplow over that stuff - year. Led me to shoulder surgery some years back.

Do you guys bring radios for when you split up? Just know some of out pontooners are into that.

The 8 inch diameter Eskimo hand Auger. What sucked is the handle screw won't come out and it is was a one peice for the trip up and down.

"Hand powered" auger yes. The ice was 16 inches.

No we don't bring radios. Typically cell phones, radios and even ipod like devices actually throw off a beacon in search mode. To us there would be too many things to turn off when the seconds count. But yes we carry cell phones that are turned off.

Usually we stick closer together though but not enough to be caught in the same slide. I checked out the avalanche conditions personally and on the Utah Avalanche Center and felt it was safe enough to travel the way we did. Still injuries, animals, etc can always happen too so I would say it isn't always best to let your gaurd down.
