Perch Search Returns to Utah
#1
Went venturing with the Friends on Friday. Hit some River trax to see what we could find. Tracked down some dinker sunfish hiding in rock crevises, but not the big-bad predators we'd hoped might be waiting for them. Pitched around rocks, and into the big river, but the schools I've seen in this spot were elsewhere that day.

So - we moved on. Hit more open water off the Bear, and got into some bluegills, and even a nice footlong crappie. Even bass came to play in the almost after ice.

Ben went to check on edges at Netwon, and with some extra boards, convinced us we could get on (and off!) the ice. So we hit it first light. No prob getting on - ice was a good 8 inches where we drilled out from the rope swing. We did get on some fish, but they were finicky. 35-45 ft of water - tight on the bottom, but not very willing to play.

Met "Bob" there, and chatted up and fished with him. Landed a few chunky 8"ers. Then the boyz wandered to the dam and got into some bass, and even some bluegill - yes Virginia - there are bluegill in Newton! One dink Crappie came to play. The musky did not want to play this day. No Jawjacker love!

Getting off - it was nice to have the boards. But the frozen mud had turned to goo, and the run out from the campground was a mud-bogging taboggen! I wasn't sure I wouldn't slip out of the ruts and into a tree, or worse! But we made it, cruised on out. (ah - a toast of adrenalin!)

On the way home we stopped off at a slough, and pitched some lines for kicks. Open water - hey baby!
I found shadows of flash in a pool across the way, and as we explored - realized they were SCHOOLS of carp minnows. Hoards of the danged beasts. Wouldn't bite a worm, or nothing. So - I started dropping below and lifting up. Snaggle puss indeed! Proof - they WERE carp minnows (not crappie boo hooo).
The boyz took off and left me to play for the next half hour -I tossed a treble below the beats, and pulled in baby-carp-after-baby-carp. Various sizes. Some almost too big!

So - in all, I had a 100+ fish day. Wish it had been 100 perch, but the carplets were entertaining. Sorting and bagging for spring catting. Guy passed by as I was walking out - saw my 'catch', and as I told him "bait" - he said THOSE?! I'm like - have you seen a 20lb catfish!!!

High Hopes. Springs a-coming! I think I know where I'm taking my cast-net now! Holy Carp Batman!
I was getting dizzy from turning circles having a fish to unhook every 10 seconds - literally!
And before anyone gives me crap for snagging carplets - I checked - and as a nongame fish, don't see anything to the contrary. I swear I hooked 'em in about every orivice and edifice they own! Jaw to butt, to side, to dorsal, chins, eyes - you name it!

Now my boy wants to come give them a try! (figured he would!) I think I need to buy a deep freeze!
(PS if you wanna know 'the spot' shoot me a PM - I won't announce it " in front of the lurkers - luuuuuurkeeeeeers" Ok Breck!)

Hey now, you're going to count all those snagged carp as your "100 fish day"?? Coyote, I had higher hopes for you! haha

It was fun, but I think I'm done with the ice. When you start putting planks down, it's almost quittin' time. (which reminds me, I wonder how they did at Hyrum today?)

Fun day, but that wind sure kept it on the cool side. That chunky perch and record bluegill were about all I caught today worth mentioning. Ben was wearing out his hooks catching bass left and right. Must have been that new fish finder of his.

Come on Springtime Kitties!

I think we tapped into a worthy bait supply. Heading out there tomorrow with the kid, so HE can give it a try. Plus with the cast net I hope to catch more smaller fish (how many times is THAT your desire?!?!?)

Come home to find he's been out with HIS buds carp fishing! Over by Blacksmith condos - carp on bread - I'm like YEAH! - ya'll went fishing (instead of chasing girls, or causing trouble - for once!). Even the cops gave 'em a "well if you're just catching carp - GO FOR IT!" schwing!

I just gotta be sure - if I'm going ice fishing still, bring boots! But I'm with ya. About done with the ice-planter-bows, ready for spring cats, and the pursuit of the Walleye!!! THIS is the year I figure them toothers out!

Sounds like a fun trip. For the Perch well 'taint' like in season past. We've been managing to bring PV keepers home mostly 8.5"-pushing 9" and fat...but one shouldn't have to employ the 3Ps every trip for Panfish... but if thats what ones gotta do thats what one gotta do and we'll 'just-do-it' as anytime fishing is better than any day not fishing.

Would really like another trip to Newton but think'n for this hard deck season won't be going as PV is way closer and like I stated we're holding our own.

Mine's a 7, and that's enough for these old arms!
Sorry to hear it, and jealous that you caught MY FISH! I was looking for that! Dang it.

Um, I think that kids kinda giddy.
Looks like you were about where we left off. At least we didn't bring a chainsaw and cut a 4x4 hole, right?
If that's your truck in the background - you probably made a good choice to park up there. I'm not doing the mud-bog again . . . got half of it in the back of my Pilot now too... gush.

So you musta fished the afternoon? I think it was noon-thirty or so when we got off the ice. Hope you managed the edge ok.

K2M - glad you are still finding them at the View. How are your edges holding up? Been still hoping for at least one run down there this season, but been so iffy - hate to put in the travel if it's gonna give me trouble.
Track down any Crappie there? Or an occasional ice-bass?

I guess Ben got hot on the bass too up against the dam. I stayed in the deeps for my stripey friends.
Are there bluegill in Pineview? It's one of those lakes with some mystery fish from time to time, no? - like the occasional trout, or catfish even!

A caught fish is a caught fish, I say. [Wink] I'm not prejudice on the species for catching sake - it's all fun to me to have a tug at my line. I read of this blind taste test in In-Fishermen magazine with carp, catfish and tilapia cooked the same way. Carp was preferred 1-2! Interesting... One o' these days, if a catch a carp from somewhere other than Utah Lake, I'd like to try one for the smoker.

I wish I had more experience with as many different lakes as some like yourself. But I find the small number I fish at challenging enough. [angelic] Glad to know that others are gettin' out more than me lately.

Most years I'm not anxious for the ice season to end and am at it till mid April, but this year I am looking forward to open water already, and I may make my earliest trip of the year to good ol' Utah Lake. [Smile] I still gotta get me a bow for carp (on my "bucket list"), so I can help liberate some of the junies. [cool]

Yote, he had to have fished it this morning. The edges are all snow covered. Makes me want to make the trip out there in the morning. Never got as warm as I had anticipated today. And it looks as if it won't be too warm tomorrow either, so should make for decent edges tomorrow out there. Anyways, you can see I got a new profile name here, so use this one for contacting me from now on. Still have the old one just in case others pm me from info they already have.

Way to go Ben - about matches with your answering ring - eh? All those stories of fishing out there, I can get why you're proud of your heritage and "home-town". Being a transplant - I get it. I'll always be a Chicago Boy myself. (yeah - got Cubs!)
Um - so you changing your flag order?

I'm thinking our holes probably did freeze up before a fresh foot could find them. Probably some silent midnight adventurer finding the super-slab crappie (and keeping the news to themselves!).
But I do think that (lucky) boy found my Muskie! Came in and stole my perchlet off the double drop, and then hung around. Yep, that's it alrighty! Musta needed a lighter setting on the Jawjacker (braided line - I was ready! - and that kid did it on 4lb test! Whew! Credit to his patience!!! ONE of the three Ps anyway!)

Rhoget - you flatter me. Experience - pah - nada but a newbie here. Though give me another season and a whole schlew of new lakes to explore up north - and I'll have NO new reports, cuz I'll keep it all on the lowdown! (teeheee)
All I can say is I wish I had YOUR photoshopping skills! You da man! Have to admit - I'm yearning for open water myself. Saw an empty boat trailer at the launch, got home to a clear tarp, woke up to a fresh foot of snow....sigh. Where's that damned marmot again? Cmon Bill! Bring IT! I have stashed a couple long rods with the gear! Few spinners and cranks....
